October 23Oct 23 This would seem a very basic question and the history of some of it is hereBefore I installed UnRAID I installed Ubuntu and Windows and used the PC for 2 weeks checking all the hardware was okay - no faults were found.Some back history, a friend runs UnRAID on an NUC 11 Extreme Kit (NUC11BTMi9) Mini PC, in fact his is the i7 version, he's been using it since 2024, so in November 2025, I decided to purchase the same or similar hardware, using 4 x Samsung NVMe PRO 990, Kingston Fury 64GB RAM, also installed a x710 NIC for 10GBe. I couldnt find at the time, memory which was on the Intel testing list from December 2022, but Kingson stated this was compatible on their list. Apart from memory, CPU, and NVMe - same build that my friend has been running with no issues, so I though a good test bed to use UnRAID for VMs, few docker containers, and SMB/NFS and iSCSI.To date, since November 2025, this has not been a stable environment, the first versions of UnRAID I tried 7.2.4 restarted after a few days, I thought it was nesxted ESXi, or Docker containers - and it did get better shutting them down, but the reboots still occured every few days - I did suspect thermal issue at this time, but didn't track any evidence of it.I lost the faith for a few months, and when I got back to testing I upgraded to 7.3.2. It get much better, no reboots, so I started building out the UnRAID, more VMs, more shares.and then in September '26 - I noticed all VMs had stopped, VM settings were not available and the btrfs cache had gone read only. - btrfs caught that 16 September record already corrupted in memory. MCE errors were noticed.After a restart, the cache pool came back online. October 23Oct 23 Community Expert I don't think this is a case of Unraid not liking the hardware. Software cannot cause single-bit flips that always land in the same byte of each 8-byte word, as in your VM disk copy test. Software also does not cause the corrected internal-parity machine checks your CPU logged earlier. Those come from the hardware. A healthy system should never produce either one, whatever OS it runs.Different operating systems drive the hardware differently. The kernel version, CPU frequency and turbo behavior, power states and which cores the work runs on can all differ. A marginal CPU or memory controller can then fail under one OS and pass under another. So the Ubuntu passes do not show the hardware is fine. Memtest86+ passing is also common with CPU or memory-controller faults, because it puts very little load on the CPU cores.Both sticks failed under Unraid when each was installed alone, always in slot 1. That makes one bad module less likely and points more to the CPU, its memory controller or the board.Some tests that could help make the case clearer:1. Run the Unraid tests with the array stopped, so Docker, VMs and the cache pool are not running. This makes the comparison with Ubuntu fairer.2. Pin your in-RAM checksum test to one logical CPU at a time, for example taskset -c 7 <your test>. Repeat for each CPU 0 to 15. Use lscpu -e to find which CPU shares a core with CPU 7. Most of the earlier machine checks were on CPU 7. If the failures follow that core (CPU 7 or its sibling), that is strong evidence of a CPU fault.3. Compare the CPU settings on both systems. Check cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor, grep MHz /proc/cpuinfo under load, and the microcode revision (grep -m1 microcode /proc/cpuinfo) in both Unraid and Ubuntu.4. Load the CPU and memory together under Ubuntu, for example stress-ng --cpu 16 --cpu-method all --verify --vm 4 --vm-bytes 50% --verify -t 3h. Also repeat the same pinned test from step 2 there.5. Test each stick in slot 2 under Unraid, using the test that failed fastest.6. Run the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool from a Windows install. Vendors tend to accept its result.For the warranty claim, save the syslog after each failure in Unraid (Tools > Diagnostics, or a syslog server that does not use the cache). Note any MCE or kernel crash lines. Your cmp output with the repeated bit position, the earlier decoded machine-check records and these results together are reasonable evidence of a hardware fault.Until this is resolved, keep a current backup of the cache data on separate storage.

I thought that I'd have a test plan which would have been conclusive, the MCE errors were caused by thermal thorrlting and over heat, which appears to have been solved, not seen anymore by UnRAID.Current machine at present is not in use because the cache is not mountable, and needs to be reformatted and everything restored. So its just in test before I restore and this happens all over again.1. Run the Unraid tests with the array stopped, so Docker, VMs and the cache pool are not running. October 24Oct 24 Author Just coming back to this, testing has been completed as suggested with Ubuntu and UnRAID.Microcode variation between Ubuntu 0x52 and UnRAID 0x58.All tests pass.Not done ther Intel test as it needs Windows, I'll sort later.So we've had no MCE or Mismatches again, with Slot 1, Stick B.So as I've got lots of spare time, added Stick A, Slot 2and re-running all the tests.

October 24Oct 24 Author I don't think these tests are really finding the issue.The issue with my tests is they are not filling all the memory, and its likely the bad memory isn't being reached or used in a 3 hour windows.Just changed the test parameters to use 40GB of 62GB, and it failed at approx 10 mins.

October 25Oct 25 Community Expert That last result is the most useful one so far. Every thread failed on the same file, f6.bin, and on every pass. The reference checksums were taken from the copies already in RAM, so the content of f6.bin changed while it was stored in memory, and then it stayed changed. Nothing writes to that file during the test, so this is a memory hardware fault, not a software problem. It also explains the earlier mixed results, since the bad location is only used when most of the RAM is in use.The next step is to find which part is faulty, because that decides who handles the warranty. The Kingston memory has its own warranty, separate from ASUS. On the NUC 11 Extreme the CPU, its memory controller and the SODIMM slots are all on the compute element, so a fault that does not follow one stick is an ASUS claim.Run your test with one stick at a time, sized to fill most of the 32GB, for example 8 files of 1536M in each location, about 24GB in total:1. Stick A in slot 12. Stick A in slot 23. Stick B in slot 14. Stick B in slot 2Then install both sticks swapped (A in slot 1, B in slot 2) and repeat the 40GB test.- Failures follow one stick in both slots: that stick is bad, contact Kingston.- Failures happen only in one slot with either stick: compute element, contact ASUS.- Both sticks fail in both slots, or only the dual-stick test fails: likely the CPU memory controller, contact ASUS.With one stick, /dev/shm is limited to half the RAM by default, so keep that part below about 15GB.Two other suggestions:- Write the original files to an NVMe device that is not the cache, then copy them to /tmp and /dev/shm for the test. After a failure, run cmp -l <original> <RAM copy> | head. This shows the exact offset and the flipped bit. If it is again in byte 2 of the 8-byte word, as in your VM disk test, that is good evidence for the claim.- Run Memtest86+ with both sticks installed. Until now it was only run with one stick at a time. Even if it passes, your checksum log is valid evidence.The earlier cache corruption fits this fault. After the faulty part is replaced, recreate the pool, run the 40GB test again to confirm it passes, and only then restore your data.

Same slot, same test, same size: stick B ran 12 hours with zero failures, and stick A failed on the very first pass, with a second file going bad soon after and both staying corrupted. The fault follows stick A, so slot 1 and the CPU memory controller are fine, and this is a Kingston RMA. Your logs from both runs are good evidence for the claim.This is also another good example that Memtest is only definitive when it finds errors. Stick A passed Memtest86+ many times, alone and with both sticks installed, and it still corrupts data within minutes when most of its capacity is in use. A Memtest pass does not mean the RAM is good.Until the replacement arrives, you can use the server with stick B alone. If you want to be complete, run the same 12-hour test once with stick B in slot 2.When the replacement arrives, install both sticks and run your 40GB test again for several hours before trusting the system. Then recreate the cache pool and restore your data from the backup. Data written to the server while stick A was installed may be corrupted, including VM disks, so where possible verify or restore it from a source that was not on this server.

They market their warehousing/shipping services to other sellers/merchants/vendors. When the inventory arrives from these vendors, it put into the same bin as every other part with the same UPC code. So when you think you are buying from vendor ABC, you may be getting product from vendor XYZ. You can't completely avoid this problem if you buy from them. You can only look carefully at the description and see if they are offering the same product from multiple vendors. IF they are, be careful...
