July 3, 201214 yr So, I wanted to try my luck at a hardware BSD firewall, but during assembly of an old PC, I accidently fried the motherboard (Possibly due to me forgetting to individualy insulate 3 wires before taped the 3 wires together...) which led me to buy a new one. I then got a free Soekris box from a friend and am now running the BSD firewall on that. That gave me a PC, with a brand new motherboard to play with, and luckily the only thing that didn't work with unRAID is the NIC (AR8131 or something...). But with the machine having been a firewall, I had installed another NIC in it, which works! I have the following hardware in my server: USB: Some Kingston 4GB HDD: 1 x WD10EADS-22M2B0 (plus two other IDE hdd's I just play around with...) MOBO: P5G41T-M LX ( http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5G41TM_LX/#specifications ) CPU: Intel E2200 ( http://ark.intel.com/products/33925/Intel-Pentium-Processor-E2200-(1M-Cache-2_20-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) ) PSU: Some stock HP RAM: 1 x 2 GB DDR3 Kingston 240-pin RAM & 1 x 4 GB DDR3 Kingston 240-pin RAM NIC: DGE530T Rev-B1 Gigabit LAN PCI ( http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=284 ) CASE: Some stock HP What I've already planned to replace in the future: USB: To something as physically small as possible (4-8GB) PSU: Something energy efficient & single rail'ed. RAM: Something to utilize the dual channel & get 8GB NIC: Some good high-end Intel that will lower ping times as much as possible (AFAIK the PCI bus should handle gigabit network, if there's no other traffic on the PCI bus?) CASE: Something... dunno yet, might go for rack? I'd also need some expanders for harddrives... Guess that SuperMicro one will go in the x16 slot, but need to figure out how many disk's I can cram into the x1? The plugins/programs I plan to use are: 1: unMENU 2: Simple Features 3: utServer 4: CrashPlan (To back up my backup shares) Plus if there's anything else I'd like to run... Guess the CPU should be able to handle it? What does people thing of the build, as a first build? With the current setup, what is the bottlenecks (what do I need to do to get rid of them?) & how many drives, with the motherboard, would I be able to connect to the board without creating bottlenecks? Are there any things I haven't thought over?
