How do you sort your media?

Featured Replies

I previously had this hierarchy:

Server

--movies

----hd

----sd

----kids

--tv

----shows

----shows-ended

----shows-kids

shows being current shows that are airing, and shows-ended being shows that or not airing anymore. But I'm learning that I watch a lot of shows that get cancelled prematurely, so shows get stuck in the current folder when they're over.

So now I'm thinking about splitting them up in hd and sd like the movies, or having just all shows and kids shows. I'm just curious how others do it.

I only use USER SHARES. I never write or access the hard drives by themselves. All my disk shares are off. I also have a very basic structure, which is not complete.

with the mkv/avi thumbnail...poster...nfo and subs

all in scene format :P

TVShows

Animated\

TH.Animated\

Tv.New\

Tv.Seen\

every show has name folder /season folder/

example

andromeda

  Andromeda S01

    Andromeda S01E01

      Andromeda s01e01 .avi

all dvdrips have epfolders/ hdtv rips have no epfolders

TV.new is just a folder that i used to keep track what i saw from new eps ... but now with my last aired hack on xbmc i rarely use it any more...

might delete it as it are only eps that are already in the library...

TH.Animated are anime and japanese stuff in Thai (naruto/HOTD/doraemon... ) for the kid

Music is divided in Albums / songs

each have artist folder .. subfolder for albums... no subfolder for songs

example

50 cents

  album

    Song

in songs only

50 cents

  song

i try to keep that up to date but there are no doubt double songs which are on an album :P

i always say when i get a lot of time i will find a better way for that .....

Similar to open toe. User shares :

Looks like nfo files would help help with much of the sorting, what do you use for playback?

I keep it simple.

\movies\*.mkv/avi

\series\[tv name]\[season]\*.mkv/avi

I use XBMC on my HTPC and it takes care of all scraping. No need for extra .nfo files or cover art on the unRAID server.

it's actually quite amazing the good job xbmc does with the scrapping ....

Wish the boxee box did better scrapping. Their licensed dB has too many errors. One error can be too much for me, so I ended up using EMM.

Mine is relativly simple with user shares.

My setup was created exlcusively to handle the boxee's terrible handling of scraping information.  Since Boxee is loosely based on XBMC this also works well for my ATV2 running xbmc.  Now if only boxee would update their terrible scan process.

TV

TV Show Name - Each TV Show contains a tvshow.nfo file used for series summary info

Season Folder (0-9) - Any special episodes go under season 0, this correlates with how the tvdb shows them.

Each episode contains three files (video file, nfo, and tbn) in the below format:

    ex) Friends.S01E01.The.Pilot.mkv

          Friends.S01E01.The.Pilot.tbn

          Friends.S01E01.The.Pilot.nfo

Movies

Movie Folder (ie. American.Reunion.2012)

Each folder contains 3 files in the below format

  American.Reunion.2012.mkv

  American.Reunion.2012.nfo

  American.Reunion.2012.tbn

Sickbeard handles all of the moving and renaming automatically to this format as well as the nfo and tbn file generation.  Couchpotato does the folder and file operations, but I have to use ember media manager to handle the nfo and tbn generation.  I haven't tried couchpotato v2 yet, so I hope it has improved (i'll be trying it this weekend).  I usually only add movies weekly so, it's easy enough to take 5 minutes and run EMM to update anything new.

I've now configured couchpotato v2 and it's metadata generation is now customizable enough to eliminate EMM .  +1 for now having a completely automated solution :-)

Since I access my media from a Dune player, a TiVo Series 3, and a TiVo Premeire XL, I can't use Zappatti or other XBMC-like interfaces for the Dune.  I use pyTiVo installed on unRAID to provide access for the TiVos and SMB to unRAID for the Dune player.  All video media is stored in the "All" directory of the Video user share, and I have a shell script that reads the contents of the Video\All subdirectories to create symlinks based on hidden files.  The files are:

.movies.txt - Movies

.tvshow.txt - TV Shows

.music.txt - Music programs

.unwatched.txt - Unwatched programs

.kids.txt - Programs the kids are allowed to watch

Each program can reference any or all of the files (for example, a concert film would have both .movies.txt and .music.txt) and the program will be added to all directories that apply.  Conveniently, the Dune Player does not display the dot files.  It also looks for files ending in extensions that pyTiVo can serve to the TiVos (.mpg, .avi, etc.), and mp4 files that can be loaded onto our HP Touchpads.  The resulting directory structure looks like this on the Dune Player:

\All

\HD

\Kids

\Kids HD

\Kids Unwatched

\Kids Unwatched HD

\Movies

\Movies HD

\Movies Kids

\Movies Kids HD

\Movies Kids Unwatched

\TV Shows Kids Unwatched HD

\TV Shows Unwatched

Under each one of these is a directory for each program containing iso and/or video files.  pyTiVo points directly at the \Video\TiVo directory so that only the programs that can be used on the TiVos are displayed.  Adding or deleting the .*.txt files and running the shell script maintains the directory structure.  I have made unMenu user scripts to execute this script and to start/stop pyTiVo and pyHME on the unRAID server without needing to use telnet.  I should also mention I am still running unRAID 4.7 and I am concerned about how to continue using this solution under 5.0 considering the new ownership/permission scheme in 5.0.

Files are named using this format:

Movies:

"Movie Series ## - Movie Name, A [Year]/Movie Series ## - A Movie Name (format).iso"

"Inception [2010]/Inception (DVD).iso"

"Star Wars 5 - Empire Strikes Back, The [1980]/Star Wars 5 - The Empire Strikes Back (Bluray).iso"

TV Shows:

"TV Series Name, A [Year]/A TV Series Name, Season ##, Disk ## (format).iso"

"Office, The [2005]/The Office, Season 02, Disk 2 (DVD).iso"

Music:

"Artist Name, An - Title, The [Year]/An Artist Name - Title (format).iso"

"Amos, Tori - Sorta Fairytale, A [2002]/Tori Amos - A Sorta Fairytale (DVD).iso"

I'm still working on a solution similar to this for my music files that works both for the Dune players and the TiVos.

    Title (year)

      Title (year).ext

TV

    Show title

                S01E01 - Episode title.ext

As others is use a basic hieqarchy but unlike most with XBMC i sue the movie.nfo and tvshow.nfo URL only files.

In essence these contain one link to either IMDB or tvdb. Why this is important is that XBMC then KNOWS what the film or show is and never asks. I also measn it DOES NOT matter what the files aor folders are named so you can get 100% perfect matching with no XBMC effort.

It also measn you can rescan at any time with no human interaction.

Good topic!

I do this:

Video library

  Films - Bluray

    Jaws

      Jaws 1 (year).mkv

      Jaws 2 (year).mkv

  Films - DVD

  Films - TV Recordings

  TV Series - Bluray

    Heroes

      Heroes Season 1

        Heroes.S01E01.Title.mkv

  TV Series - DVD

  TV Series - TV Recordings

The sub folders and file names are standardised by a program called TheRenamer (and also moved from my 'burning' or 'recording' locations to the main video library) and I use imdb for films and thetvdb for tv series. That way I know that the file names will also be correct when I scrape in mediaportal.

The thinking behind the folder structure is that I know the DVDs and BRs can ultimately be replaced at my convenience (albeit with pain/time) but things I have recorded off tv I should probably backup if I want to watch again.

I keep any subs in the mkv file, or ts file for dvb recordings, as mkv can't take dvb subs. For bluray subs I sometimes convert to vobsub and merge back into the mkv file so that I can burn them in with handbrake for an iPad version.

Movies

  Title

    Movie - Year - Quality.ext

TV Shows

  Show

    Season

      Show - Episode - Title - Quality.ext

Downloads

  File name.ext

Stuff I plan on just watching once and deleting I just Downloads to my downloads share and browse the list of files in XBMC and then delete the stuff I've watched next time I'm at a computer. Otherwise SickBeard and CouchPotato automatically sort shows and movies in to the correct shares/directories.

One big complaint I have about XBMC's movie and TV library is that it can't handle extras. Some of my movies and TV shows I have extras for, like the special features you'd have on a DVD or bluray, and each is just a file that is named what the feature is in that I place in a sub folder of the show/movie called "Extras". With movies you just end up with a bunch of garbage in your library based on the filename of the extra and for TV shows they don't show up at all so if you want to watch them you have to manually browse the directories. I wish they would come up with a solution to this.

Might as well throw my hat in the ring while i have a few mins ....

I have about 500 movies most of which are hi res and i have about 500 gig of albums (yes - lots) and i dont have a lot of time to play with library stuff so i did what worked for me. As long as i know what i am looking for its easy to find a film or an album. i know lots of people who think a genre listing is better but for me some of the films fit into many genres but only have 1 name. Everything is streamed to a media player which simply allows me to search on screen through folders in alphabetical order and i can view the text, folder art etc. simple, neat and effective as if something new comes along its pretty easy to know exactly where it goes. We even decide what to watch sometimes by my daughter deciding the high level folder (D-E-F) and my wife picking the film from within that listing (i only get to chose what to watch when i am on my own - it makes for an easy life .....)

Movies

    3D Movies

    A-B-C (folder)

        > Armagedon (folder)

                > All related files and art

    D-E-F

    G-H-I

    and so on

    Y-Z-Nos (like 007 ...., 21, 500 days of summer)

ZZ_Low res archive (for random old stuff and movies i have shrunk to watch on laptop etc - might need a tidy up if it grows and if so will just repeat the same process as main movies)

Each movie is in its own folder with any art etc. All movies begining with "the" have that moved to the end i.e. "the incredibles" is "incredibles. The" and filed under I. i dont have so many 3D movies so far but will use same format when list grows

Music

  Complilations (folder)

            > Now 80 (folder)

                > Tracks and album art

  A-B-C (folder)

      > Coldplay (folder)

            > X&Y (folder)

                > Tracks and album art

          > Parachute

                > Tracks and album art

  D-E-F

  G-H-I

  and so on

All music is in simple "name of artist" structure i.e. Elton john is under E with a folder for each album with all the art, maybe lyrics file .... stuff related ....

TV

    > Series (folder)

        > Season (folder)

            > Episode file E01-06

            > Episode file E02-06

Every TV has a series and season folder for consistency even if its made up (like "Olympics" > "London 2012" > everything saved from that event

Anyway, works for a simple fool like me
