I noticed there's a "new posts" button at the bottom of the sections page but it doesn't seem to be active.  I can't believe that there hasn't been a single new post since the last time I was signed in.

 

Am I right or am I doing something wrong?

I think you're talking about the icon legend, which indicates how new posts are indicated in each forum.

 

I simply use the "Show unread posts since last visit" at the upper-left of the header.
