July 8, 201213 yr I'm rapidly running out of free space, so it's time to start looking at future upgrades... Out of SATA ports, so I need a new controller. Looks like my main options are: 1) AOC-SASLP-MV8, like the one I have now... Anywhere from $90-$100 2) The LSI ones, which have been as cheap as $60 before, and are faster than the AOC-SASLP-MV8... but AFIAK only supported in 5.0 Either way I think I'll need two more of http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220964190145&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:3160 for my Norco case, right? Also need to think about 2TB drives vs 3TB drives in the future; am I correct in thinking that both controller cards will work with 3TB drives out of the box, but only in 5.0 releases? Any advice as to which route to go? If I go with a AOC-SASLP-MV8, I'm limiting myself for future options, but if I go with a LSI type card, then I'm stuck waiting for 5.0 to finally be bug-free... who knows how long that will be....
July 10, 201213 yr I'd go with an IBM m1015 and just upgrade to 5.0. I've been running 5.0 since beta 4 and never had any issues. You're making it out to be an unstable mess but besides what are mostly a few random problems with certain controller cards and NICs it's completely stable.
July 10, 201213 yr I upgraded from an AOC-SASLP-MV8 to an LSI MegaRAID 9211-8I, as the AOC-SASLP-MV8 card isn't supported using passthrough (vt-d) in ESXi (it causes crashes taking out the ESXi box entirely).

Wish I'd seen that before purchasing the new card, although I'm happy with the LSI card, which seems to be supported natively on ESXi 5.

Worked for me in 5.0 but I didn't have it setup that way very long. I wanted to use a SAS expander so I switched to M1015 but I'm about to setup another ESXi server with my SASLP-MV8s again so I will be able to confirm it in a week or so. I like my M1015 better as well.
