ASUS P5B-E - eSATA vs. RAID SATA

Featured Replies

All,

I have the Asus P5B-E mobo, which provides 6 internal SATA, one eSATA, and one "JMicron RAID SATA".

I have used the six internals and bought a TX4 to add four more - giving me 10.  Since I have room for six drives internally and just added a 5-in-3, I have a total of 11 drive slots (9 of them filled), I would like to get one more SATA connection.

So ... should I use an eSATA-to-SATA converter or use the RAID SATA slot?  Perhaps I can use both (though I don't need both at the moment)?  This is what I see:

Southbridge

- 6 x SATA 3.0 Gb/s ports

- Intel Matrix Storage Technology supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10.

JMicron® JMB363 PATA and SATA controller

- 1 x UltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices

- 1 x Internal SATA 3.0 Gb/s port

- 1 x External SATA 3.0 Gb/s port (SATA On-the-Go)

- Support SATA RAID 0, 1 and JBOD (by 1x External SATA & 1x Internal SATA)

Any one with this board care to chime in?

Bill

I have the P5B-VM D0.

It uses the same JM controller (JMB363).

There is a BIOS setting that you want to set the JMicron Controller to ACHI (not RAID)

You can then use the intrenal port directly, and the external port by purchasing a special eSATA to SATA cable.

I am using both these ports with no issues.
