They were Windows7 SageTV servers until I virtualized my unRAID servers with them on a Supermicro X9SCM and a Tyan S5512GM2NR. My original unRAID server had a Celeron 430 on a 3rd X7SBE.
July 10, 201214 yr I would maybe consider ditching the processor and going with something else. For how much power that thing sucks, it's not very powerful. And it's going to put off a lot of heat.
July 10, 201214 yr In the end a X9SCM-F with IPMI and a Core I3 will be more convenient. You can manage the server over LAN, Start-up, Shutdown, BIOS-settings. It can all be done from a distance. Choose the rest of the parts with care though. Especially the PSU. That Q6600 is a "hot-head" BTW, but many motherboards support it, if they are still available. Might have to check e-bay for it.

Choose the rest of the parts with care though. Especially the PSU. That Q6600 is a "hot-head" BTW, but many motherboards support it, if they are still available. Might have to check e-bay for it. I agree that the X9SCM-F is better however I've never seen the Q6600 as hot. Compared to my Athlon XP or Pentium 4s it is COLD. Also you can purchase an IPMI card for the X7SBE that works exactly the same as the IPMI of the X9SCM-F. The biggest limitation on the X7SBE is the memory. The maximum supported is 8GB which limits you to about 5.9GB in ESXi when using passthrough. The Q6600 also does not have hyper threading.

I have a Q6600 on my C2SBX with a Rosewill Z4 cooler that never shows more than 45C under full load. I agree that an i3 is cooler but compared to a Pentium 4 or Athlon XP a Q6600 is COLD. My Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz would idle at 40C and 60C at full load even with a Zalman 7700.
July 16, 201214 yr Honestly, if you're going to buy a new motherboard and ram simply so you can recycle a CPU that is 3 generations old.. I would consider just starting over with a new system that has modern specs, more powerful and use less electricity.. Put the old CPU up on eBay or something and get a few bucks. If you already had a full build, I would say limp by with it. I still have a q6600 and a q9550 in servers that are not on 24x7. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Wow just took a look at eBay and the Q6600s are still going for$70-80 bucks used. I will have to put mine which is just sitting in a drawer on there and unload it. This makes just upgrading to a Core i3 all the more worth it. Sell it and a new i3 will only set you back $50-60 bucks or so.
