ESXi and Photoshop

Featured Replies

I am in the process of renewing my unRaid box with a Norco RPC-4224 and  SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O. I was going to buy the Intel Core i3-2100 but then suddenly my desktop died, so I though again about ESXi.

The only reason I would even consider a desktop is to use Photoshop and Lightroom, although I'm not really a heavy user on these. Do yo have any experience on running Photoshop withing a virtualized machine in ESXi. What would be the hardware requirements, mainly CPU and RAM?

Would it be possible to run:

  • unRAID
  • Win 7/XP for Photoshop and some video editing
  • A light Win 7 machine for my wife

PS: I already asked about ESXi and Virtual box in this topic (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20605.msg182839#msg182839). I had made my mind (so I though) to go with VirtualBox but my desktop died, so the ESXi idea keeps bumping into my head  ;)

and did you get Photoshop to work, including OpenGL support and 3D hardware accelerated graphics?

what about PCi/integrated GPU passthrough?

GPU passthough is very tricky and might need a hack.. last time i did it, it was a hack. a little google on the VM support forums will point you in the correct direction. most people have only gotten very few cards to work, mostly ATI.

You can use the emulated 3D in esxi with open GL support. not sure how good it would work for day to day heavy work in PS but for light work and droplets it works. i have CS5 on mine.
