July 11, 201213 yr I was reading Engadget and saw that WD just came out with a new line WD Red, these are focused for NAS and home server use. I think this would be perfect. I need a new 2tb should I go ahead and buy this or stick with the green till it has been tested out more. Here are some links http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/wd-red-hard-drive-official-launch-nas-soho-storage/ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236343
July 11, 201213 yr They seem like an all around upgrade from greens, even with power consumption. They seem to be about 10-20% more in price though. That may change later, if reds were equal in price to greens, then I would go with red. I would definitely wait for some consumer reviews.
July 11, 201213 yr Yesterday, I bought a 2T Red drive for the parity drive for a new build. It arrives today. Newegg is amazing. I don't know what came over me. I'm usually much more conservative in my hardware choices. I'll let you all know how it goes.
July 12, 201213 yr "WD has also increased the MTBF for the Red drives from 650,000 hours to 1,000,000 as they believe them to be that much more reliable than their standard offerings. They are rated for operating temperatures up to 70 degrees C (instead of 60) because the drives will operate in hot, multi-drive environments." Also 3yr support instead of 2 and 24/7 support number for them. Seems like a good deal. Article on them below. http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/wds-red-are-the-first-nas-specific-hard-drives-20120710/.
July 12, 201213 yr I would buy these as it likely includes Hitachi technology. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk 2
July 13, 201213 yr Here's a review. http://www.storagereview.com/western_digital_red_nas_hard_drive_review_wd30efrx Looks pretty good. They seem to perform better than the green drives while using pretty much the same amount of power. The increased MTBF and 3 year warranty make it a pretty attractive drive option. If no horror stories emerge I will probably go with one of these the next time I need more storage space or a drive outside of warranty fails.
July 13, 201213 yr Will probably get one of these for my apple time machine. The original drive died in it. They have poor cooling.
July 22, 201213 yr Can anybody report good/bad about these? I'm in the market for a 2tb soon, so I'm liking the 2tb red on newegg for $129. Thanks.
July 22, 201213 yr Seems like a good choice... especially since the normal drives are 2y warranty and Seagates consumer drives are only 1y. Hands on review with lots of stats :- http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4842/western_digital_red_series_review_a_low_cost_validated_nas_specific_hdd/index1.html
