Ripping DVD's and BR's

Featured Replies

I have seen that someone has given instructions on Installing Handbrake on unraid but I am curious if anyone has created a plugin or web gui  to automatically rip DVD's and BR's?

I am thinking of something that after configuring settings  would allow one to put a disk in a drive and then from the Webgui simply specify if disk is movie or TV, click Rip DVD or Rip BR and the results would automatically processed and place in their proper locations.

The needed libraries to do the "ripping" would have to be installed... that would likely be a complete and utter nightmare in the long run.

I do my ripping from my ESXi based setup.  The XP VM has the BluRay drive attached to it and I rip from there to a "scratch" section on my cache drive.  Work beautifully and with less hassle than trying to get it all working within unRAID.

ya....that what I would do as well, I just have friends that really like what I have set up but aren't technical so I am trying to figure out what I could build for them that would make it as simple as possible and have it all done from the same box.

The "only" way to do "same box" is an ESXi type setup.

I am sure it could be done within unRAID but i doubt it would be easy.  For me it is easier to set up ESXi, install Windows in some flavor and then enable remote desktop on the Windows VM.  Have them remote into the VM from another computer and control it that way.

In fact this is the direction I am heading. I HAVE to use a Windows box to do the actual disc backup. None of the tools necessary for that task are available in Linux, and likely never will be.  Then I have handbrake running on unRAID to do the transcoding. I feel your pain about making it simpler for your friends, but in the end, it's not a simple process because it has been engineered to be difficult by the manufacturers.

makemkx has a linux version and it only needs a couple of libraries etc to compile - I was working on it a while back, but got side tracked...

I rip all my DVD's and BR disks with MakeMKV on a PC.  I would really like to be able to do it on the unRaid system using a PC driving makeMKV on the unraid system; perhaps through a web browser as opposed to TTY. It would be an awesome tool to make things much faster.  Naturally one would need a driver for a nice BR optical drive on the unraid system to keep network traffic to a minimum.

Currently I run MakeMKV on the PC writing directly to the "Tower".  I always write to a specific disk managing the disk space the way I want it, but using multidisk shares to access the Movie, Concert and TV show libraries.
