July 14, 201213 yr I have a plan but I don't know how practical it is Right now I have an unraid server with 13 drives, all is well but I am thinking of trying to conserve some power Here is my plan and setup 1 unraid server (pro not that it matters) 1 xbmc machine (openelec but can switch if needed) 1 low powered atom? machine with 1 drive Now unraid is off most of the time I would like it to start up when xbmc starts up and shut down when xbmc shuts down. another thing is the small pc will be my downloader (sick/sab/couch/headphones and torrents). It downloads all day and at say 2-3 am it starts up unraid when it boots up it then begins to transfer the files over, when done shuts down unraid. I would like the programs (sick/couch ect) rename the files so when xbmc starts up it scans and begins to update. as far as folders I have user shares movies, music,tv shows and others. I will also create the same folders on my atom as well to make transfering easier. I do have future plans as in adding more xbmc machines so the start/stop unraid may change but for just one machine right now it is fine. another problem I can see is when the transfer begins if couch is moving a movie from the download folder to the folder that is getting transfered it may also begin to transfer the partial movie. one thought is I can scedual something like at 1am downloads stop then at 5am it starts up again.
July 17, 201213 yr Personally My unRAID machine is on 24/7 and my drives are off unless prompted by something on the network. Would I be happy knowing I couldn't access data unless its a specific time or until I use XBMC I think it would drive me bonkers. Every morning at 6am I have a custom script that says. Did anything download if so fire up these other scripts and move files over to the unRAID machine. If not then don't do anything. Later on at night if/when I watch something on the network my drives spin back up... Do I think its possible what your asking? Sure, but honestly I think your trying to conserve to much power when an unRAID machine running with no drives isn't really using very much.
July 18, 201213 yr Better idea. leave server on 24x7.. run the downloader on it.. if your Server is a beast of a server... switch it to an atom or I3 to conserve power.. you will probably save power this route..
July 18, 201213 yr It will work but it doesn't make much sense to me. Just pick a low power Intel processor for the unRAID server like a G540 or I3-2100. It will have idle power usage as good as an Atom yet way better processing power when it's needed. Then, your drives will use <1W when spun down so they're not using enough power to justify worrying about them having power applied. The only difference is a bit more power for the larger motherboard and power supply and maybe 20W to 30W more for each 8-port SATA card you install. So, you're looking to run a whole machine to try and save maybe 50W of power at the most for the server. This new machine will use at least 1/2 of that meaning you save maybe 25W of power with the unRAID off but use 1.5 times more power when the unRAID is powered-up. Running 24/7, that 25W saved can't cost any more than about $30. I have no idea how that little bit of savings could justify the extra hardware expense.
July 22, 201213 yr Author Another problem is with the programs sab, couch, sick and headphones it most of them work fine until I shutdown, loose power or reboot my server. It starts over fresh and I need to do the setup over again. headphones I never did get to work. my server is using an i3-2100t so it is energy efficient. I might look at exploring this still using current hardware I have at home.
