August 25, 201213 yr Author I received all parts, except for the HDDs, which i'll buy locally. Now in the process of assembling, will keep you posted, and document all and share.
August 27, 201213 yr ...you sure about your SSD selection? - they support TRIM, yes, but ESXi does not implement it. better go with a drive with internal garbage collection, like the Samsung 830 models - a high performance (or pair in raid1) 6GB/s SSD for datastore is a good choice. However, your SDD bays are SATA-II only...go and get some without internal connector and attach cables directly to the SSD(s).
August 27, 201213 yr Just a note, the Startechs support SATA III (even though there's some confusion on some descriptions in various places). http://www.startech.com/HDD/Mobile-Racks/25in-SATA-Removable-Hard-Drive-Bay-for-PC-Expansion-Slot~S25SLOTR Also, the Corsair Performance Pro has a Marvell chipset, which employs some of the best advanced garbage collection in the game. Quite a few of us with ESXi builds use them. See: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/marvell-ssd_7.html Of course, you can still bring the drive to its knees: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5785/corsair-performance-series-pro-256gb-review/7 - but that's highly unlikely in a home environment.
August 27, 201213 yr Ah!...great info, BetaQuasi. I just did check the specs listed in the links from newegg....looks like the OP is good to go, then.
August 30, 201213 yr Author an update: it seems my M1015 is dead, so I'll have to buy a new one. Or is there an ulternative card type? Note that I already have the Intel res2sv240
August 30, 201213 yr an update: it seems my M1015 is dead, so I'll have to buy a new one. Or is there an ulternative card type? Note that I already have the Intel res2sv240 If you don't want to go with a used M1015 you could get this LSI for the same functionality as the M1015. It is what the M1015 is based on according to the LSI controller flashing thread.
October 6, 201213 yr Author Hi all, This is to update you that my system is up and running, finally, after a lot of work!! Building your system is not easy at all, it's time consuming... Thanks to everyone who helped.... I took notes of my build, with issues and difficulties faced, and just need a full write up, and hopefully in the next 2 weeks I'll share it.....
