July 18, 201213 yr Hi Guys Well my first fore into a media storage was a Synology 411j and after ripping my collection and discovering Sickbeard, my 8TB (I’ve been tempting fate and running them as single disks with no protection) worth of space is filled up and I’m looking for more. The other reasons for wanting to upgrade is that the little synology I have choks when its unraring and trying to watch a movie at the same time. As I’m a DIY sort of guy so I’m going to give this unRAID thing a go. This is my first unRAID build (and post)! So thank you for reading this. Budget: Low as possible, but around 350-450 for the machine. How many drives: I currently have six 2TB harddrives (4 are already in the NAS), I’ve also got a 3TB WD green drive unopened, and would be planning to get a 7200rpm 3TB drive for parity and SSD as a cache drive. So potentially 9 drives, but would like the option to expand to a few more in the future if needed. unRAID addons: Sickbeard, Couchpotato, SABnzbd, Headphones, Subsonic (I believe you can install this?), mySQL for xbmc database. Drive speed: The current drives I have are all green drives. Spare parts: Only really the hard drives. I do have an old intel quad core (6years old) machine with 4G of DDR2 and I think it has 6 sata ports. I however run windows 7 on this and use this to rip and manage media and watch xbmc when the wife wants to watch TV. Not sure if I can somehow run unraid off this and windows 7? Unfortunately the machine has to be in the TV room so I need to try and make it as quiet as possible (we don’t really have to ability to run cables within the house). As this will be running 24/7 power is also a consideration. Build Suggestion Case: Fractal Designs R3 (as I’ve heard it’s a good quiet case)- $139 http://www.cplonline.com.au/online-shop?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_default.tpl&product_id=4949&category_id=524 MB: AS Rock B75M (It appears to have 8 Sata ports?) $69 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=138_711_1183&products_id=20082 CPU: Depends what people reckon about CPUs and my add-on requirements? But I can get a G630 for $67, a G850 for $81 or and i3 2120 for $124. Will using a Pentium slow down considerably while using SABnzbs and watching a movie? Power supply: Antec Neo Eco 450C 450W Power Supply (Has 5 sata and 4 molex, I realize I would need a few converting cables to power extra hard drives) $59 ttp://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_226&products_id=13454 RAM: Can get 4Gb sticks for $24, if you guys think its worth it can add an extra stick for $23 Therefore total (minus extra cables..etc)= $356 for 4Gb RAM, Intel G630 $370 for 4Gb RAM Intel G850 $411 for 4Gb RAM Intel i3. I realize that I’ll need to buy a SATA port card at some point, but I’ll just start by filling up what I’ve got and getting that when the time comes. I’ll also see how the stock fans go but consider adding some aftermarket ones to try and keep noise down. I’m also wondering if a server mother board is worth the extra dosh? For an extra $150 I could import(as they're not cheap or easy to get here) a SuperMicro X9SCM-F instead of the AS rock but this would require I use of the i3. So that would push up the price to mid $500 plus the need for different Ram, so it would really need to be worth it. As I said before I plan to add a 7200 3Tb drive for parity and a ~100GB SSD for caching (to use with SABnzbd, mysql..etc). But I'll start by transferring my collecting and then adding the parity drive a week or two later (need to keep the bills down to keep my better half happy ). Sorry for the long post. Thanks again for reading and any advice. Cheers Al
