New Build - Hardware Check

Featured Replies

I've been lurking around the threads for a while and I finally decided to pull the trigger an build my first Unraid server. Before dropping the cash on my build, I'd like to get the community's comments to make sure I'm on the right track. Here's my build list:

Leftovers from previous builds

From what I've read, the Mobo and the power supply should be compatible with Unraid, but I'd love to hear any suggestions you guys have. As it stands, my total build cost after rebates is only ~$240 (w/o license), so I think it's a pretty decent, and affordable, build.

Thanks guys.

I recommend Core i3s but it looks like you're trying to keep the price lower. I would still go with something other than the AMD though. You're wasting a lot of energy and putting off a lot of heat with that integrated GPU that will never get used in a server like this. I would say go with this motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138332) and and Intel Pentium G620 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116399) if you want a low priced machine. It uses less power than the AMD chip and has more power, performance wise, for about the same price as the AMD parts. I realize it's go two less on board SATA ports but just pick up one of these: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10407&cs_id=1040702&p_id=2530&seq=1&format=2

I would also say you should seal off all those vents in the plastic on the side of the case. You want all the air coming in to the case to travel over the drives if possible. Because those vents are so close to that real 120mm fans on the rear of the case and the power supply it's definitely going to suck some air in through those vents in they aren't sealed.

There is a distinct possibility that you might need a video card to do the very first setup.  That mother board does not include one.  ANY cheap video card that will fit in the board will work.  (You might be able to work around needing one but if you know of the problem ahead of time and have a plan to address the issue, you won't be caught flatfooted!)

EDIT:  My dumb!!!  The A4-3300 has a built-in video GPU!

And so does the Intel for that matter, it's just a low power one.

I'm using this build mainly for network media sotrage, but I would like to be able to do some transacoding of SD/DVD videos via Serviio, run a bittorrent server, and and a few other menail tasks. Aside from dropping a bit more RAM in this box (I'm planning on 4GB already) should this build be sufficient?

Memory is cheap.  Go with 8GB.
