July 21, 201213 yr Hello! It's time for me to make a sanity check list regarding some newish and hopefully better supported hardware for my unRAID server. I was hoping to continue using my old Cooler Master Stacker case but it has an insane amount of vibration going on despite being as heavy as it is, and I suspect that's because of the aluminum in the case. I'd really like to get this server as silent as possible since it'll probably live in the back of my living room and because of this I decided to switch the case to a Fractal Design Define XL instead... I'm hoping that the maximum of 16 drives (28TB data with 2TB drives) will keep my data needs in check, that the steel case will be more robust, that the included noise absorbing mats will help keep it quiet enough for my tastes and I also like the simple no-frills looks of the case. At the moment, my movie/tvshow collection seems to add up to those numbers: ~130 blu-ray titles (estimating around 180 discs at 50GB each ie ~9TB bluray data) ~200 dvd titles (estimating around 300 discs at 5GB each ie ~1.5TB dvd data) With those estimates, I'd at the very least need ~11TB data to cover my current collection. I'll be growing my disk array slowly though, starting small and expanding as my needs do. (it will take some time to rip my collection anyway) On to the hardware: Silence and expandability (up to a maximum of 15-16 drives for now) are my highest priorities and after that comes budget. I've tried to check out as much as I could by searching the forum and trying to make sure that there's no obvious glitches. I'm planning to go with the latest 5.0 build as OS. I'd really appreciate if someone could take a look and see if there's something that needs to be changed or doesn't make sense. Case: Fractal Design Define XL USB3 (Black) (http://www.fractal-design.com/?view=product∏=68) (10 * 3.5" internal slots, 4 * 5.25" external) PSU: Corsair CMPSU-650TXM 650W (too much? I prefer a modular to ease with cabling) (http://www.corsair.com/en/power-supply-units/tx-series-power-supply-units/enthusiast-series-modular-tx650m-80-plus-bronze-certified-650-watt-high-performance-modular-power-supply.html) Mobo: ASRock Z77 Pro4 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Pro4/?cat=Specifications) (2 * Intel SATA3 6Gb/s, 2 * ASMedia ASM1061 SATA3 6Gb/s, 4 * Intel SATA2 3Gb/s, RTL8111E as Gigabit NIC) CPU: Intel Pentium G620 2,6GHz Socket 1155 Box RAM: G.Skill NQ DDR3 PC12800/1600MHz CL9 2x2GB HDs: 2 * 2 TB Western Digital Green (EARX) 4 * 500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue (WD5000AAKS) 1 * 320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (STST3320620AS) 1 * 250GB Samsung Spinpoint P120 (SP2504C) Already got those 8 drives. The 6 older drives will be switched to 2TB Green drives as I go, and I might even add a SSD as cache later on. I tried to check for the availability of Supermicro mobos on the swedish market but they seem to be tough to find, you mostly find the usual consumer brands here. Is there any easy way of checking whether the PCIe x4 (or the x16?) slot on the motherboard supports storage controllers like the Supermicro AOC SASLP MV8 just in case I'd like to throw in one of those later? The above hardware gets to a grand total of ~550$ (~3800SEK) without drives. Doesn't sound too bad to my scandinavian ears! Thanks! // Mattias
