Upgrade (Essentially a New Build) - Components

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

So a while ago, I posted this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=14850.0

I have been running with that for about a year and it has been solid as a rock. I'm very happy with UnRAID.

I'm running out of space now and was going to just throw another drive in there. But after assessing where it stands, the noise-level and heat being thrown off by the old system has pushed me to move on to an essentially new build.

I'd like to work towards what kevinsyn created with the "Blackhole" here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=19773.0

I've already ordered a Lian Li PC-A77FB case since there seemed to be a decent deal on the last one in stock at Canada Computers.

Here's what I'm looking at getting right now:

RAM:

Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 991995

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226190

Processor:

Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32120

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115077

Hot-Swap Bay: Just 1 to start

SUPERMICRO CSE-M35T-1B Black 5x 3.5" Hot-swap SATA Hard Disk Drive Trays

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405

Motherboard:

SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C204 Micro ATX Intel Xeon E3 Server Motherboard

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182253

I'm trying to determine what other costs I'm missing in this. I know that I either have or am knowingly missing the following:

  • Cables
  • PSU
  • Storage Hard Drives
  • Cache Drive
  • Cost of UnRAID software
  • Fans

Am I overlooking anything else? Any monumentally stupid choices in there? :o

That RAM will not work with that motherboard.

you need ECC unbuffered (UDIMM) server memory.

What PSU are you using?

those boards are picky about PSU's.

Dammit. I did that last time. How about this Kingston?

Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9S/4G

Is that processor/board/ram way overkill?

I hadn't looked into one yet.

Looking through the reviews on the NewEgg site, this board seems to be very finicky. Not only with the PSU as you say, but also with RAM and the PCIE slots.

Any recommendations on another Intel-based MB/Pro/Ram combination?
