Cheapest functional fileserver (pre-built)(opinions on setup and controllers?)

Featured Replies

Hi I was going through various setups trying to get the most cost effective build i could (after i found out that the RB-1200 Server doesn't seem to be an option) and after trying several scenarios i can't seem to beat the setup that i came up with pre-built on cyberpower (http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1EBH6B). Its not ideal but i could fit the 5 drives i have now in there no problem and could fit more than 9 with drive cages etc i think, also it has more in some ways and less in other (more mem that i think i need, more processor, no controller, not all bays could be made hot swapable, etc) but for ~$525 + some hard drive controllers its so far been a bit hard to beat.

I have tried checking to make sure that the different parts are compatible but wanted to post this to the forum to see if there is anything i am missing and see if there are any suggestions for barebone/JBOD controllers (everything i find seems to be for doing RAID when seems unnecessary since I plan to use unraid).

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Look at the HP N40L ?

Every now and then you catch a good sale on one.

They support 4 drives out the box and can be modified to hold 6.

Is the 6 drive mod on this forum?

You don't need the SSD unless you want to use it for a cache drive. I don't see the option to remove it but I wouldn't buy a 30gig SSD anyways. Just too small for many practical purposes.

Thanks, i'll take a look at it but I was hoping for something that could hold a minimum of 9 (pref 12) drives.

Yeah, your totally right but since there isn't an option to not have a drive (and I have a ton of drives at the moment) so what i was going to do was cannibalize that drive and use it in another system I have (that would really benefit from a SSD drive for reading and booting) and then stuff all my regular SATA drives in this box :)

But other than that, the setup looks ok?

Cheers

+1 for the N40L

I did the mods and now have 6 drives in one working fine, currently 9.5TB of space. My solution to the disk limitation was to buy a second server - with the discounts in the UK they are £140 each and for that they are small, quiet, functional and perfect for unraid. I have 1 as a main server for everything and the second for backups and where i am working out how to use different pluggins etc, as this grows i will leave both online all the time. I also did "the silent fan mod" which you can find and it was very easy, does not make a world of difference down to absolute silence but it is quieter and a more "smooth" kind of sound if its perched on a desk or something. I did all of this without being highly skilled and by reading info from the net and support from these forums. Overall good kit !
