Vista Share Mapping: Pls Help!

Featured Replies

Ok, I'm trying to figure out how to get my Vista HTPC set up so that it MC points to the drives on my unraid server for pretty much everything.  First problem I'm having though is that "tower" does not seem to show up in Vista's Networking section.  I can connect to //tower just fine in a browser on the Vista system but when I open Networking it finds every network device (including 3 other XP machines in my house) BUT the "tower" unraid server.  Am I doing something wrong??

Make sure you set the proper workgroup name on your server.  If you already have, it might be a matter of just waiting for the master browser on your network to update it's browse list.

Sorry for my ignorance but how do I know what to set my workgroup name to on my server?

I'm not a Vista guy, but I believe you need to change it to "Workgroup" (may need to be all-capped).  That is the default for Vista vs. Mshome for XP (and, I believe, Unraid).

Right, yes I noticed last night that my Vista machine's workgroup was WORKGROUP so I changed unraid's workgroup setting to be WORKGROUP instead of MSHome.  It still does not show up in Vista's "Networking" section.  I was able to map a network drive by just using e.g. \\tower\disk1 but it still seems like something's wrong.

Sometimes (illogically), it just takes one more reboot...
