July 27, 201213 yr Hi there, i wanna build a low power consumption unRAID System. My Goal is about 25 Watts in idle without storage. I have this together for now. http://geizhals.at/eu/?cat=WL-252490 The power supply is 80 plus silver certified. I will start with 4 drives and will go up later. I want to put a plex server on the system too. Therefore a have chosen a dualcore celeron. Is there better Hardware to build a low power system? Is there a way to shutdown the unraid system automaticly at night when noone is connected? Thanks! Julian
July 27, 201213 yr I have a personal preference for Intel motherboards - although a little more expensive, they do come with genuine Intel ethernet chipsets. The main problem with your hardware selection will be the power supply, with its split 12V (15A and 11A) rails. How many drives do you expect to use in that case? It could accommodate up to 13, with the addition of a 5in3 cage. There's no way that psu will support 13 drives - I wouldn't go above five or six green drives on it.
July 27, 201213 yr Author Thanks for your answer, is there a difference in power consumption between the motherboards? I know that my powersupply will not deliver enough power for 10 drives. But now i have 4 and in about 2 years a maximum of 6 i think. So for the next few years my power supply will do fine. The power supply only has 300 wats so there is not so much waste in power consumption. And its a 80 plus Silver one.
July 29, 201213 yr Author Hi there, im now dealing with two mainboards. Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D3V -> Cheaper, one more PCI-E Slot, EFI Intel DH61BE -> maybe lower idle consumption Wich board would you prefere?
