krackato
I'm trying to install an AOC-SASMV8 card into my SuperMicro MBD-X8SIL-F-O motherboard The card fits into the motherboard. However, I'm not sure it's supposed to go into the slot that I'm installing it into. Can you guys check the photos below and let me know. Thanks. http://i.imgur.com/r0rQ9.jpg http://i.imgur.com/byJaX.jpg Quote Link to comment
PeterB
You are referring to the unused parts of the motherboard connector? That may be correct - it could be a PCIe x4 board going into a x8 slot? It would help if you tell us the exact model of motherboard and card. Quote Link to comment
krackato
The motherboard is a SuperMicro MBD-X8SIL-F-O. The card is a SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8. Quote Link to comment
PeterB
Yes, that's correct. The black sockets are PCIe connectors, all three are x8 size, although, electrically, only two are x8 and one is x4. But your installation is absolutely correct. Quote Link to comment
krackato
So I can put the 4x cards into the 8x slots? Sorry if this is a bit newbie-ish, I haven't made a PC in a couple of years. Quote Link to comment
marcusone
Yes you can or visa versa. Mist 8x cards can run in a 4x slot (just not as well) why they are the same physical size. Sent from my SGH-I727R using Tapatalk 2 Quote Link to comment

Pretty sure OP didn't wait a year before trying out for another confirmation On the side note, completely unrelated to unraid, does anyone know the performance degrade of graphics cards on x8 instead of x16 PCI 2.0 slots?
