July 30, 201213 yr Hi, I am new to unRAID so I put myself in your hands. I have read a lot but find myself more and more confused. If anyone can help I would be eternally in your debt. I have been offered a server containing the following parts. Will it work OK with unRAID? Intel S5000VCL Motherboard 3ware 9550SX-12 Raid Controller 2x Intel QUAD CORE XEON CPU 8G DD2-667 FB-DIMM ECC Fully Buffered Rackable 3U case with 12 hot swap bays and PSU Heatsink (not sure what spec) I would like to use 3TB drives, but would be OK with 2TB drives if it does not support them. I want to use it to stream HD movies, for file storage and desktop/laptop backups. I could also upgrades components to make it better and would welcome any suggestions. Or if you think this is not a good place to start I would welcome your honesty! Many thanks for any help.
July 31, 201213 yr for some reason I swear I answered this same question on this same build a few months back. if you can, search the forum. i cant remember the parts of the top of my head and I am running late.
August 2, 201213 yr it absolutely will not. Don't fear, I'm here to help you get rid of this thing. I'll pay shipping to 33026 no, seriously I'm not joking I want that
August 2, 201213 yr Author @Johnm - thanks so much for getting back. The only hits searching the forum are the CPU and RAM - I can't find anything for the motherboard and RAID card. @elmetal - thanks also for getting back - why won't it work, do I just need to replace some components? I haven'y bought it yet and I'm in the UK so its not for sale. So, should I get this thing and swap out some components or give it up as a bad idea? As ever, I really appreciate your help!
August 2, 201213 yr @elmetal - thanks also for getting back - why won't it work, do I just need to replace some components? I haven'y bought it yet and I'm in the UK so its not for sale. Oh dear! I think that elmetal was kidding you so that you'd let him have it for not very much!
August 2, 201213 yr best thing download the latest test2... check network card and raid controllers work make a 3 disk array copy data back and forth do a parity check see if it's fast enough for you simulate bad disk and then your answer shall come i think ....
August 2, 201213 yr i think this was what i was thinking of http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=17126.msg156952#msg156952
August 2, 201213 yr Author Many thanks everyone, I think I will buy it and have a go. If I have to swap out the controller and/or the Motherboard so be it. It has been offered to me at a good price - probably worth it for the case and hot swap bays. I'll post and let you know how I get on
August 2, 201213 yr The only downside of that setup might be the CPU and RAM. First off. The CPU's are probably way more powerful then you need (unless they are the 1.66 variety). Even so, I would consider swapping for a 5148 LV 2.4Ghz LGA 771 processor. You could probably even go with just one. Find out which model they currently are. Case in point. I have a supermmicro setup with dual core 5160's. They generate allot of heat when they are churning. fills the room with heat in the winter. The 5148's are much cooler. See pricing on eBay. FB-DIMM's. Use only as much ram as you need. They generate allot of heat and need to be cooled actively. This may not be cost effective to diminish, so I probably would bite the bullet or make a trade. unRAID runs great in 8GB. but if low power and heat matter, here's where you could save a bit. I retired a bunch of my XEON machines because they generated so much heat in my room. I went with mobile processors and love it!
August 2, 201213 yr Author Great advice @WeeboTech, many thanks. I'll see what arrives and take it from there.
