SSD cache drive on 4.7 with ReiserFS

Featured Replies

I am looking to replace my cache drive with a SSD drive. However I have some small concerns about using ReiserFS which obviously has no TRIM support.

I cant update to v5 since its not released as stable yet.

Any advice on current best practice for a SSD cache drive on 4.7 with ReiserFS

cheers

Don't do it ;-)

You wont get the benefits of the ssd in a typical unraid setup.

Your thinking in terms of raw throughput. I am looking for faster seek time which for torrent, XBMC fanart and ebook librray should make a vast difference.

I wouldn't worry about trim right now. I've used SSD's on some busy windows machines and have not had a failure yet.

I would choose one of the newer SSD's that support automated garbage cleanup though.

See JohnM's comments regarding these drives and use with vmware esxi.

I also remember reading about a tool with hdparm to wipe the drive in a shell script. I think this had to do with initiating a garbage collection.  I'm not that up to date with the subject matter, so don't take my word on it.

From experience, none of my laptops have had issues with the SSD.

Thanks for the info. What I am thinking is that since they are so cheap i might just buy one and use it and damn any optimization.

Once ext4 is added to V5.X and it released as stable I can look at it again.

I just recently added the M4 from Crucial, and though it doesn't seem to GC as well as the first two in JohnM's list, I believe it uses the same controller. More importantly, in my eyes, it can also be found quite a bit cheaper...

:)

Sorry to move a bit OT, but why use a cache for xbmc fanart, ebook files, etc?  Why not just add a SSD to the array and use that?  Data is pretty much static so write speeds are not a factor and the data stays protected.

That's what I did and haven't had any problems.  Am I in for a disaster?

No, you're not in for disaster.  If one is already using a cache drive, some plugins prevent the cache drive from spnning down(sickbeard, I believe is one).  Hosting the files there prevents an additional drive from being spun up assuming the media being played isn't on the same drive as the fanart etc.

It mainly file count i find bring performance down. XBMC art + ebooks currently account for over 0.5M files on my system so the most direct path performs the best for me. Obviously throw in that I want array disks to stay down (or put another way the cache drive has the greatest chamnce of already being up) it just became the slickest solution.

YMMV depending on the scale but I believe cache + SSD would be the best performer

I figured that since SSDs never spin down or spin up it didn't really matter if I used the SSD cache or the SSD in the array.

You make a fair point. You could use a disk share and protect it in 4.7 but i have found pre 5 series that disk shares often move as disks are brought in and out.

But perhaps you are right once you add a SSD the concept of a cache drive becomes less interesting if your using disk shares.
