August 1, 201213 yr Hi, Been searching for a while and trying to find a decent guide on how to install plugins like: sabnzb sickbeard coachpotato plex servio Most guides say to install it on a cache drive which I won't have, and they say not to install it on the USB boot drive either ( dunno why ?? ) So any ideas / guides ?? Thanks
August 1, 201213 yr Most guides say to install it on a cache drive which I won't have, and they say not to install it on the USB boot drive either ( dunno why ?? ) Most add on programs write significant amounts of data on a regular basis, which can shorten the life span of the USB thumb drive. The solution is to utilize another drive, doesn't really matter which one. The cache drive is a logical choice, because if it is kept spinning, the rest of the array can spin down, at the cost of only one running spindle, where if you utilize an array disk, the parity drive has to stay spinning, so two running drives at all times. As to the lack of support for the free version, my personal opinion is that if you aren't willing to pay for someone else's expertise by buying a license, you should use your own expertise to get things up and running. All the extras you listed are authored and supported by unpaid forum members, so you would need to approach them individually about why they don't offer the option to install on one of the array disks. I'm pretty sure at least a couple add ons do offer the option. If you educate yourself, there is no reason I can think of that any of the add ons couldn't be modified to install to an array drive instead of the cache drive, but you would need to do the modifications yourself. To get started, I would look at one of the plug ins you want and figure out how they determine which drive to install on, and modify each instance of "cache" to refer instead to "disk1". You will likely break things, but that's the way you learn.
August 1, 201213 yr Author Thanks very much for your detailed reply. I have no issues paying for the software but would like to try it first and guess make sure all the features/ addons work. I get all the hardware this weekend so will hopefully get a chance to have a play with it then !

Keep in mind that what you are paying for is the unraid software itself, all add ons are community authored and supported and totally un - guaranteed. That said, most of the community is very supportive and will gladly help resolve issues you may be having.
August 9, 201213 yr I'm running 4.7 with no cache drive (using the 3 drive version), and also running sabnzb, sickbeard & Playstation Media Server too from an Apps drive, which I mounted with S.N.A.P. All working fine, and yes it was a bit of a steep learning curve coming from a Windows environment, but with help from the friendly forum I got over all the speed bumps. I like unraid with it's capacity to expand when required, and parity checks for my media. Good luck, and any questions just ask.
August 9, 201213 yr The reason installing to something other than cache is not supported right now is because, and I haven't nailed down the reason, the plugins manage to start before the array is online despite waiting for the disks_mounted event to fire. When this happens the array gets stuck in a starting loop and never comes online. Work + family have been requiring quite a bit of time lately so I haven't been able to dedicate much time to the plugins for the last few weeks, but they are far from abandoned. Once things settle down(i get our new member trained and my son goes back to school) things should roll on smoothly
