August 13, 201213 yr After 5+ years of running 24/7, my intel celeron processor and/or motherboard bit the biscuit. I plug in a monitor and keyboard with everything unplugged except for the motherboard power, and no boot screen, just black. SO, I need a new motherboard/cpu/ram. I am looking for the most power efficiency I can get. Looking for a recommendation, not sure what people are using now? Do any of the following work for unraid, price is not an issue, just power efficiency. 1. A8-3870K APU w/ Asus F1A75-V PRO Motherboard This bundle is on sale for $209 locally 2. FX-4100 Processor Bundle w/ Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 Motherboard For $199 locally 3. FX-6100 Processor w/ Asus M5A97 EVO Motherboard For $229 locally
August 13, 201213 yr After 5+ years of running 24/7, my intel celeron processor and/or motherboard bit the biscuit. I plug in a monitor and keyboard with everything unplugged except for the motherboard power, and no boot screen, just black. ...no beeps, no lights? My bet would go on the PSU first.
August 13, 201213 yr Author No beeps, even when I pull the RAM. But I do get all the fans running, and if I plug in hard-drives, they spin up. 1 light on my sata card does light up too, so I think power is fine, but mobo is toast? I will test with another PSU though, thank you.
August 13, 201213 yr PSU is a good bet, I had a board do that a couple months ago, disks would spin, fans spin, but nothing else. Put a known good PSU in and all was well. Motherboards and CPU rarely fail outright, there are usually issues before they fail. It's possible, but not the most likely scenario.
August 13, 201213 yr Author Swapped out the PSU, no-go. Either the CPU or motherboard is shot. I need to buy a new mobo & CPU today, can I please get a recommendation on a low power system with 6 SATA and at least 1 PCI please. Thank you! Rory
August 13, 201213 yr ....if not looking for advanced stuff and things, I'd probably go with an intel i3 based build. Low power when idle and some more headroom left. The older 1156 socket CPUs (i3-540) are still sold. If only one PCI slot is needed, maybe I'd go even with an intel H55 based mobo, like the DH55TC. The intel LAN chip on-board should run with the e1000e driver. I can get this combo here for EUR160 (inkl. VAT).
August 13, 201213 yr Author I went with the A8-3870K APU and Asus F1A75-V PRO Motherboard, cheaper locally than an i3 solution. Hopefully unRAID has all the drivers, I found in some other posts the A75 chipset working for others, so I am hopefully. The motherboard I liked due to the ample selection of PCI and PCI-E slots, I need at least 2 PCI for my SATA controllers. Building tonight, will set to resolved once it works! Thanks everyone. *Update* Installed the new hardware, hooked everything up, and voila, first boot everything was perfect. Re-assigned my drives and currently performing a parity check. I love you unRaid!
December 13, 201213 yr Author Just to follow up, the A8-3870K APU and Asus F1A75-V PRO Motherboard worked very well. 2 x 16xPCIe slots, plus USB 3.0, plus an eSATA port that support port multiplying for my external drive cage. Very happy with the purchase, unraid booted first time and had parity running.
