New Build: Media Server, Downloader, Storage

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am a complete and utter noob and while I think I've done my 'research' I know I've missed something. So any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Budget: ~$AU90O

Drives: Eventually 8, I think I'd be happy with 8 x 3TB

Expandibility: Hm.. Hope my setup would last me 3 - 4 years?

Unraid Add Ons: Plex, Sickbeard, CouchPotato, SABnzbd, any other recommendations?

Green/Low power: Prefered

Spare parts: 1TB and 2TB externals but not till I've transferred the contents of the drives onto a HDD within Unraid

Reason I want Unraid is for the storage/backup, as a Media server using Plex and a download machine using Sickbeard, etc. I'd like it to be able to transcode 3-4 1080p streams at the same time. I'd also like the machine to be Wake on lan and scripted to shut down at specified times, unless i'm better off leaving it on 24/7? Only would require it on from roughly 6am to midnight.

So with the above reasoning, maybe, just maybe, my parts make sense:

G.Skill F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT (2x4GB) DDR3         $45.00 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=16930 (8GB because its cheap?)

Western Digital WD Green 3TB WD30EZRX x 2     $338.00 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=17275 (1 parity, 1 storage initially)

ASRock H77-PRO4-MVP Motherboard                 $99.00 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=20084 (4 sata and 1 pci-e for raid controller eventually)

Antec Neo Eco 450C 450W Power Supply           $59.00 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=13454 (cheap with I hope enough power to start up the cpu and 8 drives)

Antec Nine Hundred Case                               $115.00 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4228 (9 x 5.25 for hot swappable 3.5 cages eventually)

Intel Core i5 3470                                         $199.00 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=20894  (processing power for transcoding and inbuilt graphics)

Total                                                                   AU$855.00

Yay or nay?

Thanks,

Ross
