[Solved] Preclear existing Drive in the Array

Featured Replies

Hey,

I have an existing drive in my array i want to format (or preferably preclear would be better I think) and either keep it in the array or re add it the array after format. Can someone please tell me how I can do this.

The reason I need to do this is I added a new drive to my array recently, disk3 and was having some issues with it and now it is read only.

I cant remember how it happened but I somehow had sabnzbd installing to my new disk (disk3) and I believe i turned it off or I did something to crash the server during it. Anyways when i used telnet to rm the folder it wouldnt allow me saying something  like input/output error. I checked the forums for similar problems and realised that it may be a filesystem error so I followed the steps here on disk 3 http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Check_Disk_Filesystems (i did a --check first and --fix-fixable afterwards I cant recall any unusal output so i assume it worked)

I then checked disk3 to see was the .sabnzbd directory there and it was. However when I cd into it and went back out it disappeared (cache dirs?) so i assumed the problems were sorted.

Tonight I went to add some movies to the array and invoked the mover script to see "(30) Read-only file system" and "rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1042) [sender=3.0.7]" errors.

I am currently copying my data from disk3 to the cache and want to format/preclear disk3 and start again if thats possible. Thanks alot

edit: After more searching on the forums I think I have found what I need to do.

I followed this guide to Remove the disk from the array

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ_remove_drive

At the moment I have disk3 unassigned. I just went to disk3 drop down when I stopped the array and selected 'no device'. I cleared the parity data with initconfig and I am currently preclearing disk 3 in screen. I will leave the array stopped until that disk is precleared and then see if I can start the array with the precleared disk as disk3 again.  :)

edit 2:

Just went to the tower web ui after about 1 hour and now I see that all the disks have somehow been unassigned. Is this normal?

We don't know.  You did not elect to tell us which version of unRAID you are running, AND you did not attach a syslog  for analysis.

Solved, it was very simple in the end.

Remove drive from raid

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ_remove_drive

Preclear the drive

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Configuration_Tutorial#Preclear_Hard_Drives

Add the drive back to the array

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Add_One_or_More_New_Data_Drives

Everything is back to normal and working well. I actually never precleared that new drive so Im glad I got to do it afterall ;)
