CPU choice: Pentium Dual Core E2140 1.6 GHz or Celeron D 356 3.33 GHz?

Featured Replies

Hi,

A friend has offered me a second hand Pentium Dual Core E2140 1.6 GHz CPU for free.

In my Unraid system I'm currently using a Celeron D 356 3.33 GHz.

Both CPUs are 65 nm mfg tech.

What do you think I should do? Change my current CPU out with the newer one? My main goal is lower power consumption and then performance.

Thanks.  :)

Cheers,

Søren

Stay where you are... unRaid doesn't exploit dual core/cpu...

I vote switch, because the E2140 can be under-clocked and under-volted, and thereby significantly reduce heat/power while still having performance better than what you have now.  You can also even compile your own kernel and get cupfreq support.

For free? I'd take it, if only for the simple reason it's "better" in every sense of the word, will use less power, and is just better.

unRAID doesn't currently exploit multiple cores, but it may in the future.

Go for the better already-less-clocked CPU - which is also more "customizable" and greener than your current.

After all, like the guy above said, tomorrow the second core could be exploited, you never know.

Are you sure your mobo supports it though?

Ah, btw "D" generation (and even more, Celerons) REALLY suck (and they sacked from the first day they were introduced).

If Intel didn't come up with Core2, we would probably all be using AMD now.

Hi,

Thanks for all you answers.

I have already switch to the E2140, just to see if it would work. No problem there.

I don't feel any perfomance difference at all duing normal operations, so I think i'd stay with the newer/better CPU. :)

Cheers,

Søren
