August 21, 201213 yr Hi, Let me start out by saying I'm very new to this. My intention is to have a NAS capable of streaming (and most likely transcode) full HD content to more than one device at the same time. I'll be using a PS3 and Plex (on a few Rokus) to stream the video to the TVs. I would also like to us it as a back up for my laptop. Here are answers to the questions posted in the forum. What is your budget? I'm looking for a build that will handle multiple full HD streams to different devices. I can't build something that can't handle that task because it would not pass the wife test. Therefore, I'm willing to spend up to the point where I get reliable quality. I hope that makes sense. How many drives/how much capacity? I have asked for at least 4TB. I do not have a preference for how many drives I have. Is expandability important to you? If so, what's your long term goal? I figure I will be required to expand in the future as I build my video library but I think I'll be good with my minimum 4TB for a few years. Are you interested in running any unRAID Add Ons? Yes, I would like to run PMS and utorrent. Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives? I do not want any lag in my video streaming. I don't know if that means I need the faster drives? Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build? No, I'm starting with nothing. If you already have parts in mind, please oh pretty please post links to them so that we don't have to look them up. I gave my requirements to a local shop and this is what was proposed. I would just like to know from the experts if my build is adequate. August 21, 201213 yr The i7 as well as th3 7200rpm drives are overkill. An i3 2102T with green drives will be more then enough power for your needs.. with 4TB I would suggest 2 x 2TB + 1 x 3 TB (for parity)that will give you parity protection without the need for an unraid license key. You will be able to expand with 3TB drives when you need them, you will need a license with extra drives though. If you want the cache drive you will need to buy a license key anyhow..
August 22, 201213 yr Author Thanks Helmonder, The extra power was for the transcoding of large video files in the Plex Media Server but it might be too much.
