connecting windows machine to unraid via ethernet

Featured Replies

okay i connected my unraid server to my windows HTPc... how do i access the files?

i connected them through ethernet.

i cannot see the shares or tower.

do i have to set DHCP on or off? how do i connect to the shares?

Most people connect their unRAID server & their other PC to a switch / router. Not directly to each other.

The router / switch usually assigns IP addresses using DHCP to the computers.

You can connect 2 computers directly to each other without a switch / router, but you may need a special crossover cable to do it. You would also need to set static IP addresses yourself on each computer & make sure they are within the same IP subnet.

Cross-over cable is not required for gig-E. Turn on Internet sharing on the HTPC then use DHCP on the server.

No new ethernet device has needed a cross-over cable for some time now, they should auto detect the need to "cross-over" (at least anything made in the last couple of years for sure).
