chuck23322
FYI -- I've posted before that I've spent the few extra dollars (usually about $30) to get the "retail box" version of 3TB Segates from Best Buy, etc vs the "bare drive" from NewEgg, etc. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=21254.msg188915#msg188915 And my reason was to get the 5-year warranty. Confirmed by entering serial numbers into the Seagate warranty tracker website. I've now (had friends, etc) check FOUR extended area Best Buys for another 3TB drive with 5-year warranty. Of the FOUR -- only ONE had any remaining "5-year" warranty drives -- the rest had "1-year". It's printed right on the top of the "retail box" -- my last purchase was at a po-dunk Best Buy (I drove 35 miles to get there to check) -- and they had three -- TWO old-stock with "5-year" warranty, and one new stock with the "new 1-year" warranty. The SKU numbers were identical. The Price was identical. And the Bar Code was identical. The only difference was the "warranty" listed on the top of the box. And re-confirming via the Seagate site - entering the serial numbers - confirmed the 5-year warranty -- I bought two more at $159 each. They are normally $179 at my Best Buy. And these are bare drives (not cracked open external drives -- which may void warranty). But in a "retail box". So if you're interested -- for the warranty -- may want to check... The Best Buy website still says 5-year -- but the drives in THREE other locations were all 1-year... c3
I think I followed you, but just to confirm... When the box says 5yr, you got 5yr, and when the box (same price and barcode) said 1yr, it was 1yr. So, the only place misleading was the website. Did I get that right? Link to comment

Easy enough to check the box if you go to the store to pick it up. However, if you order through the Best Buy website & have it shipped to your house... which do they send you? Link to comment
