stevesugrim
Hey gang - Running unRAID on a 15 bay unit, with 4 shares - all set to high water. All the shares are set to split level 0, with one share, 'Movies' - set to split level 2. During a copy, one of the drives filled up during a copy and halted the backup (0 bytes free). I had all the shares to keep about 32 Gb free space, so I'm not sure how this happened. How do I fix this? It's a 1.5 terabyte drive. Should I put in a 2 TB drive and rebuild? Delete files and run the backup? Do I set all the shares to split levels to 2 on the shares to avoid this in the future? (Movies, Files, Photos, Music) Any guidance would be a great help. Thanks in advance! Link to comment
marcusone
Something I have noticed with unraid used for backups... if they backup is overwriting a file, or adding to a file, like an incremental backup, it won't notice that there is not enough space to "add" to the file. I guess because it is doing either an overwrite or modify, it doesn't check free space (it being either windows/backup software, or unraid, i'm not sure where the check takes place). Also, Unraid doesn't create the new file on a share with space due to it being an overwrite (so is told to use the same file, so keeps in same location). I don't think there is any other solution than to ensure that drives used for backups have lots of free space at all times. Not sure if this is the issue you are having... but thought it worth mentioning. I've never posted here about it as I assume there is nothing unraid can do about the issue I have (as its just the nature of incremental/overwrite backups). Link to comment
drumstyk1
I am a complete noob so don't try this until someone corrects me. I just want to learn too. Is there a reason that you can't delete a portion of the data on the full drive (say 100GB), change the split level to something less restrictive, and then reinitiate the transfer of the missing files? I'm sure i've prob missed something here... Link to comment

That would probably work... what I did was delete the backup file that was getting overwritten, so that when it when to make the updated larger file, unraid then "split" it correctly onto a new drive. Frank1940
Read this section on Min Free Space in the user WIKI CAREFULLY: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Un-Official_UnRAID_Manual#Min._Free_Space To find the place to make this setting; Open the 'Share' page on the user interface, then click on the share name (ex. 'Media'). The box to make the setting is under 'Share setting'. Link to comment
stevesugrim
Excellent - thanks everyone. I've managed to delete the files off the drive that was full. I reset the minimum free space on the shares to 100 Gb, and changed them to split level 2. In process of recopying the files to see how unRAID deals with the file distribution. Hopefully this will be the ticket! Link to comment
