Harpz
Hi I'm new to unRAID but enjoying the experience so far, in the process of migrating my data and drives to my server I've noticed a couple issues with a couple of drives. I decided to have a look on the WD Site to see if there were in warranty and to my surprise they were: WCAV5D092592 WD10EARS-00Y5B1 IN LIMITED WARRANTY 06/18/2013 WCAZA4585231 WD20EARS-00MVWB0 IN LIMITED WARRANTY 03/15/2014 The Smaller and the oldest of the drives is the 1TB, it has a Power on count of 419.25 days and an LCC of 92449, i have only just run WDIDLE3 /S300 on thsi drive. 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 087 087 000 Old_age Always - 10062 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 170 170 000 Old_age Always - 92449 The next drive is my 2TB that has just come out of my main machine and is currently in the server running ./preclear_disk.sh -A -c 3 /dev/sdX like all my drives that have gone into the server, this drive has a Power on Count of 364.25 days but has a LCC of 241712 and a MZER of 1. 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 089 089 000 Old_age Always - 8742 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 120 120 000 Old_age Always - 241712 200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 1 Neither of the drives have ever given me any issues so far but i would like some piece of mind. Should i RMA them and if so how do I go about this as I have never done anything like this before, what reason / comment do i pick for the return as I don't really want the drive rejected and returned for any reason. I've created a WD account and registered all my drives with them on there site, whilst I was registering my 2 newest drives I got an OUT OF REGION Warranty Status, i hope this doest affect any future returns. WMAZA9227899 WD20EARX-00PASB0 OUT OF REGION 12/01/2013 WMAZA8726413 WD20EARX-00PASB0 OUT OF REGION 10/01/2013 Look forward to replies and thanks. Smart reports attached for each drive. Harpz
Had a closer look at the 2TB Samsung drive also and It's in warranty also, Serial Number Seagate Part Number Warranty Status S2H7J90B825066 HD204UI In Warranty Expiration 22-Nov-2014 I have noticed a few attributes change on this drive since installing it in unRAID, the Raw Read Error Rate used to 0 (26/08/12) and is now 2, and the Multi Zone Error Rate used to be 7 (26/08/12) 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 100 100 051 Pre-fail Always - 2 200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x002a 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 26 Should I be concerned also about this drive and get it RMA'ed? And in neither case has the normalized value of 100 changed. In other words, all drives have raw read errors. Until the current normalized value reaches the associated failure threshold, the manufacturer considers the drive to be working as expected. Don't RMA, learn more about SMART values instead. Harpz
Hi So there's noting to worry about in MyMain then? On a side note why isn't there a Model Family showing up all i get is WD (unknown family), when i see others MyMain screen shots the data's there. Any help understanding the smart reports is appreciated. Link to comment
Helmonder
Your drives look ok. SMART is not as easy as it sounds, try and read up on it. In the meantime "pending sectors" and "offline uncorrectable" are a sign that something is going on. Thing is that the trend is far more important then the absolute value, it you have an uncorrectable sector then the drive will function without an issue and if it remains with that one sector there is no issue. These figures become important if they change over time, when they grow examine.. It's a bit like skin cancer actually.. No problem with a mold, but if it changes, or more appear, go see a doctor .. (thats good advice btw guys..) Link to comment
Harpz
Thanks for the reply, good to know I have nothing to worry about at the moment. I have the smart history plugin installed so I'll keep an eye on that. When you say the trend is important over raw values ate you referring to if I see a steady increase in the numbers I should be worried. Are the raw values not as important then, what values should I be looking at when I get a smart report? I will have to have a read up on smart, can you recommend a good source? Does anyone know why the Model Family isn't showing up all i get is WD (unknown family), when i see others MyMain screen shots the data's there? Link to comment
Helmonder
RAW values are dangereous to interpret, they do not mean the same for every drive.. And a certain amount of "failure" within a drive is ok, that is the way the disk was created.. Link to comment

Harpz
Hi and thanks for reply. I take it something will appear in the WHEN_FAILED column when there's a problem? What do the values in VALUE, WORST and THRESH represent then? Link to comment
