Hi y'all,

Machine is up and running (no HDDs yet...they won't be here till next week), but I can't access "//tower" from my windows pc.

I have tried wired and wireless.  When wired, I can see activity on mi NIC in the server and the corresponding light on the router is lit.

My ident.cfg looks like this:

# Generated names

NAME=Tower

COMMENT="Media server"

WORKGROUP=Workgroup

localMaster=no

smbPorts="445 139"

timeZone=GMT-5

network.cfg looks like this:

# Generated network settings

USE_DHCP=yes

IPADDR=

NETMASK=

GATEWAY=

I have a DHCP server in the form of my wireless router.

When I run ifconfig eth0 on the unRAID box I get a bunch of stuff back, but nothing that shows it's ip address.

I think I actually reached the end of the internet searching for answers before I had to come begging, but here I am....begging.

Can anyone push me a little further on this?!?!

Much appreciated.

Andy

At the login I type: root

Then ifconfig eth0

dgaschk,

It returns:

Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 14:da:e9:08:9a:c3

BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

Andy

helmonder,

At the moment I have 2 pcs, 2 phones and a tablet connected to my network.  Not counting the unRAId box, naturally.

When I ping I'm getting all kinds of hits so it's hard to tell.

In the meantime went into my router log and I can see all of the devices (both wired and wireless) that have connected, but I am not seeing one that would be the unRAID box.

My nic is flashing on the box and my router has a light in the port that its currently plugged into...like it's physically connected, but not logically being recognized by my wondows box?

Thanks,

Andy

Ok...booted with 5.0 RC3

Still couldn't get there with browser using //tower, but I can ping "tower" and it replies!!!

So using that IP address, I CAN get there with the browser using the IP address...woohoo!

Now just to figure out how to resolve the name "tower".

I'll keep working on that.

Thank you very much for all of your help, guys...invaluable!!!

I suggest the latest version: unRAID Server 5.0-rc6-r8168-test2 AiO.zip

, as earlier versions had MAJOR bugs in dealing with larger disks.

I have successfully booted with: unRAID Server 5.0-rc6-r8168-test2 AiO.zip.

Seems to work ok...still can't access with "//Tower"...only IP address.

Can anyone tell me if this is a problem?  Do I need to resolve this or is it ok to only be able to access by IP address?

Thanks,

Andy

If you set a static IP address on your unRAID server , there is a possibility that your router will NOT include the server name (Tower) in its table.  In that case, you will have to use the IP address to get access to the server.  Did you reserve the IP address in the router table to prevent the router from assigning that address to another machine via DHCP?  Some people avoid this issue by assigning the static address at the top of the range since most (if not all) DHCP servers start at the bottom of the range.
