[SOLVED] Any speed advantage to mounting a USB drive to Unraid server?

Featured Replies

I move lots of large files from USB 3.0 drives on and off my unRaid server.

I get 20mb/s copying files to Unraid from a USB drive via my Windows 7 machine.

I just went through the procedure to mount my USB drive within unRaid using directions found here:

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Mounting_an_external_USB_drive_having_an_existing_NTFS_file_system_in_READ/WRITE_mode_to_transport_files_from/to_unRaid_server#Newer_Versions_of_unRAID

I get 18mb/s copying files to unRaid from the mounted USB drive.

Not what I was expecting, but maybe this is normal?  I was hoping for a speed boost but I guess parity writing is the issue?

really not sure why speed will be slower internally..  but if the drive is USB2.0, you cant expect much more from it (20~25MB/s is roughly the max i have seen).

I don't believe unRAID supports USB3.0

The drive is 3.0.

Going the other way, coping files to the external drive within unraid gives me 21mb/s.

I pulled the drive from unraid and installed it under my windows machine again.  Same file copy, 26mb/s.

Either you have a VERY old and slow spinning drive in the USB 3.0 Case, or you are not connecting it to a USB 3.0 port on your windows machine.  That is 2.0 speeds.

I have a 5400rpm drive in an USB 3.0 enclosure and get 60-80MB/s when connected to my windows machine with a USB3.0 port (usually have a bit of blue, instead of black plastic inside).

I will double check, the port I am plugging into is Red, and the others are black.

I know on my unraid server the 3.0 ports are blue.  Maybe my windows box with Red ports are not 3.0.

or they are and there is some other issue... check for driver updates, lose usb cable (correct USB cable, as 3.0 are different), etc.
