September 6, 201213 yr Pretty interesting article from ArsTechnia on the new version of Hyper-V announced yesterday. I wonder if the hardware requirements are any less picky than ESXi? Would this work for unRAID do you think? Can't see why not... I for one am going to be attempting an install over the next few hours to see what's what. Dependent on my crumby internet downloading the ISO (ETA 14 hours!). http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/09/first-look-hyper-v-2012-targets-vmwares-air-supply/ Oh, and did we mention that whole "free" thing? Unlike the free license version of VMware's ESXi, the free version of the Hyper-V hypervisor is just as capable as the version that ships as part of Windows Server 2012—there's no cap on the supported memory or number of processors. Hyper-V Server 2012 is a full-feature version of the hypervisor, with all of the same manageability features of the Server 2012 component. If you're not planning on running a Server 2012 license in a hypervisor, but want to run other operating systems as virtual machines (such as Windows 7 or 8 for a virtual desktop infrastructure, older versions of Windows Server, or Linux) using Microsoft management tools, Hyper-V Server 2012 is all you need.
September 6, 201213 yr I played a little on the RC one and that biggest thing that is a pain is that it assumes you are on a domain. There are work around for Workgroups, but never got to play with that.

Dependent on my crumby internet downloading the ISO (ETA 14 hours!). I was very, very interested in Hyper V 3, since it is very easy to do raw device mapping of individual hard drives to a virtual machine, unlike ESXi which requires fairly obnoxious command line work. Unfortunately Hyper V doesn't pass through USB devices to VMs, so i don't know how you'd boot Unraid. Most workarounds seem to involve buying things like USB over IP devices, which seems ridiculous. If we (or Tom) can come up with a solution to the USB issue, I think this would be a great solution for people who want to maximize the usage of hardware without VT-D.
