[Answered] Red Errors when preclearing; however "preclear successful" at end

Featured Replies

I have errors that I assume are from the HDD that I am preclearing (I'm not sure how to tell from the logs). However at the end of preclearing, it says successful. I am still in the window of opportunity to return this HDD, however I'd like to be sure it is bad before I return it. Attached is my log file.

Sorry if this a rudimentary question, I'm new to unraid.  :-[

the disk is bad.  Although it can be read, the raw read error rate is too high to pass the internal SMART tests.

It has nothing to do with unRAId, or the preclear process, other than the disk had already marked over 700 sectors as un-readable, but apparently was able to read them after re-writing them.

The raw-read-error rate is too high to pass the SMART tests though, although it is apparently eventually reading the sectors, after many retries, but having much difficulty.

RMA the drive!!!

Will do. And thank you so much for taking the time to reply!!!

So the last thing you highlighted: "SMART overall-health status =  FAILED!" is basically what I am looking for to verify my results for next time?

No, you need to look at the whole picture.

There have been plenty of disks that pass SMART but are unable to pass preclear without new un-readable sectors showing every new cycle

Alrighty. More reading for me.  :D

Thanks again!
