September 9, 201213 yr Hi y'all, I have my server up and running for the first time. All disks have been PreCleared...array is in order...shares setup...Plex installed...not a red light anywhere to be found...all looks well! Except...On my Roku box when I go into Plex, I see a crap-load of categories, channels, etc., but I do NOT see my server. It seems like I am sooo close...can someone please get me over this last hurdle? Thanks extremely! Andy
September 9, 201213 yr Getting started with local Plex Media Server content http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/40686-getting-started-with-plex-and-your-roku/ Obviously, you won't need step 1 if you have Plex running on Unraid If you have any questions, I will try to help.
September 9, 201213 yr Author prtsmgr, Thank you for the reply. I have followed all of those instructions and I added a Library Section and mapped it to a folder that has one AVI file. When I hit the refresh button, there is just a little spinning icon next to the Library Section name...it just keeps spinning...at the bottom of the page it says "no movies". Have you ever seen that? Thanks! Andy
September 9, 201213 yr Author SidebandSamurai Not sure what you mean. Is there a problem with AVI files? Can PLEX recognize them? Andy
September 9, 201213 yr What is the best format for my video content? There isn't a single definitive answer to this question as it can depend on which Plex client you're using to access your content as well as how you plan on accessing that content (locally on the computer, local across your network, or remotely from outside your network). That said, we can recommend some general guidelines that most people find useful: MKV and MP4/M4V are popular file formats/containers that both generally work well. Video encoded as H.264 is the most broadly compatible, can often take advantage of hardware acceleration, and tends to give small filesizes for the quality you get. AAC and AC-3 are popular audio formats to use with video. DTS is also popular if your playback hardware supports it. VIDEO_TS (as well as ISO, IMG, dvdmedia, and other "disc image" format) content is generally not recommended as it is not compatible with most Plex clients and usually can't be streamed. SRT format subtitles are the best supported. VOBSUB/PSG format subtitles may not work with all clients and particularly with streaming.
September 9, 201213 yr Author What's also strange is that I can see the folders in Plex on my TV, but they are empty...I appear to be signed in ok...but on the myPlex page, I don't see any servers on the "Servers" tab.
September 9, 201213 yr Author Hmmm...so AVI may be the issue? Let me see if I can convert it or find a file in another format. Andy
September 9, 201213 yr I just checked and I do have plenty of avi files. So most likely it's something else.
September 9, 201213 yr Author Well...I guess that's good news and bad news...I have a lot of AVI files, but I can't get Plex to see them...haha!
September 9, 201213 yr If there are no movies in the library section, that needs to be fixed first. I wouldn't touch the roku app until the plex media server library displays correctly. You may want to double check everything. Have you restarted since the installation?
September 9, 201213 yr Author I put an MKV in the folder too. I moved the files to the top of my share "Media". Restarted unRaid (along with the Plex obviously)... Plex on my TV sees the folders/shares, but not the files...insane! Andy
September 9, 201213 yr Author Well...I simplified this as much as I can. I put files in a few different folders, including my top level one. Every time I create a Library in the Plex Media Manager I can see the Library on my TV, but no files. I'm stuck. What a waste. Andy
September 9, 201213 yr I've had problems with Plex not seeing movies/tv episodes before, the first step is to take a look at the plex scanner log to see what it's doing when it see's your file - i'd restart plex first, then do a deep scan from the media manager (check the plex wiki, it's done by hitting the refresh button and one of ctrl/alt/shift). you've done the basics right - movies are named properly - 'movie name (year).avi', permissions on the files are right (I use 770 for everything).
September 10, 201213 yr It sounds like it's a permission error. Basically when plex searches for a media file, it's unable to write to the database hence, the 0 media files. How did you install plex might I ask?
September 12, 201213 yr Author Well...as it turns out, it all had to do with the way the files were named. I was trying to create a movie library but the names were not like movie names. After changing the Media Scanner I was off and running.
