[SOLVED] Error with Parity drive, please inform

Featured Replies

I am a very novice unRAID/Linux user and have been running my unRAID build without issue for over 2 years.  I turned off my build the other day b/c I was leaving town for awhile, but after I returned I cannot connect to the server.  After looking at the Web menu I see that my Parity drive has the (blue ball) next to it and the server is stopped due to NEW PARITY DRIVE INSTALLED error (red ball).  I have looked through the forums but could not fully understand if others have had the same error as me.  I have done the appropriate S.M.A.R.T. test on the drive as well as unplugged and replugged the SATA and power cables with no success.  Any help would be very much appreciated

Was your parity installed with a green ball when you shut down the server? It sure appears that the server was started without the parity drive since there is no indication of the previous parity disk info and that usually shows up in italics under the new drive info when you replace a drive.

At any rate, you have a pending bad sector on the drive. You can run the preclear and see if it gets reallocated and the drive is stable or you could just click the check box and hit start and see what happens.

One other important thing, make damn sure you haven't somehow swapped the parity and one of the data drives because any writing to the parity with data on it will desctroy that data. If you're not sure, unassign the parity and start the array first and make sure your data disks are ok.

I have been copying and reading files from the server before i turned it off, so I assume that the parity drive was working (I only checked the WebUI after the server stopped)

It's been a while since I ran preclear (I still have the commands saved in a file I created but how can I tell if the errors persist afterward?  Do I then run another S.M.A.R.T. test on the drive or just assume that it is good after the preclear?

It it the same drive, I checked with the screenshot that I took when I created the server.

Just get a SMART report. A test is not necessary.

Your disk looks fine, but I think you are using a VERY OLD version of the preclear script.  Please download and use the most current.

There was one sector where the contents did not match the checksum at the end of that sector...  It was able to be re-written in place, so no re-allocation was needed.

Thanks for all of the help guys, I will update the preclear.sh file.  Are there any benefits to upgrading the system to v4.7, or "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" should apply?

We have absolutely no idea...  since we have no idea which version of unRAID you are currently running.

Every version of unRAID fixed something....

See the release notes in the wiki for details.

Found you gave the release in the first post in this thread... (sorry)

There were 13 versions of unRAID between yours and 4.7.

If your server is working correctly for you, you probably do not need to upgrade unless one of the bugs is causing you to experience errors.
