[SOLVED] Double Check on Replacing Data Drive

Featured Replies

Had 1 of my 2 data drives taken out of service due to write errors. I ordered a new WD HDD but it's now the largest drive at 2TB where the other 3 (including parity) are 1.5TB. Therefore the new one would have to be parity. Do I still follow the instructions at http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Replacing_a_Data_Drive to replace it?

No, that procedure will not work.

Assuming you currently have one disk that is marked "disabled" then you can use the "swap disabled" procedure.

Basically, you install the new larger disk, assign your OLD (current 1.5TB) parity disk as the replacement for the failed disk, then assign the NEW 2TB drive as parity.

When you then start the array unRAID will first copy from the old parity drive to the new and THEN re-construct the contents of the disk that had failed to the data disk (the old parity drive becomes the replacement for the failed data drive)

See here for the official description of the procedure: http://www.lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/UnRAID_Manual#Replace_a_failed_disk

That's what I've been searching for! Thanks! Swap disabled, I will do that.

Just make sure... the disk you are replacing (assigning OLD parity drive to) must be marked by unRAID as disabled.  (Red indicator next to it)

You cannot use the swap-disabled procedure if you do not have a disk that is currently marked as disabled.  :(

I definitely have the red ball next to that drive. Was running some smart tests on it via what I found on the faq friday night and it was failing some things so I just went ahead and ordered a new drive. It's still showing as disabled since I didn't try to reenable or anything even though I saw those directions too. If it's under warranty that just gives me a reason to upgrade Unraid from the free license and use all my drives ;) Although, I only have 4 sata ports :(

Ok I think I have a problem.

I powered everything down, swapped the wrong drive to the new one so I powered down again and this time I hooked them up as I understand they are supposed to be.

Hooked the new drive up where the old Parity drive was. Hooked the old parity drive up to where the bad data drive was. The bad data drive was unhooked. Started back up and now the parity drive is (sda) where before it was (sdb) and my first data drive (the one that was bad) shows up as Not Installed. I decided that something is most certainly not right with that and I would shut it down again, put everything back exactly as it was, ensure I shut down the array properly, turn off several of my plugins and check everything looks good and then retry swapping the drives. Upon booting back up everything still looks as it did, Parity is now sda still and disk 1 is Not Installed. Also noted quite a few reads and writes (12,783 and 22,398) on parity so now I've freaked out a bit and I'm trying to stop the array and it's just showing "Retry unmounting user share(s)..." Hopefully I haven't lost everything.
