September 19, 201213 yr I build a new unRAID server and i want to protect it with a UPS. As i see in my searches everybody is suggesting APC but they are very expensive in Turkey (2 or 3 times for other brands) and my budget is a little short. In this situation can i use any other UPS (other than APC) to shutdown my server when the batteries are going low. Or is this feature is only possible in apcupsd with an APC UPS. My last question is if i have to use APC, is http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR1200G-GR this UPS is ok for this feature and a 6 drive home server? PS: I'm a newbie for unRAID an Linux
September 19, 201213 yr That UP will be more than enough for a 6 drive server. I have a 24 drive server on the 1300 model. As far as alternatives, I can't help there. sorry
September 19, 201213 yr I run a 900 modell (540 watt) with 14 drives, all 7200 rpm 1 TB. This works fine also, it shuts it down after a few minutes when i pull the power, thats all i need.
September 22, 201213 yr apcupsd is NOT the only program that will monitor a UPS... It is one written specifically for APC brand UPS's It is the only one I know of that has a install package in unMENU. The reasons are simple... Because it only has to deal with one brand of UPS, it is easier to configure. (the other is that APC is quite common in the USA, and it is the brand I have most in my home... and I created the unMENU plugin to install it on my server) apcupsd will control some other brands of UPS,as they have adopted protocols similar to APC to be compatible with existing software. You might try your brand of UPS and see if it is recognized. This is because many use very similar USB protocols, and prior to that, many used similar serial port protocols to identify power loss signaling sent by the UPS. If not, the other program used to monitor UPS's is http://www.networkupstools.org/ You simply need to look for a pre-compiled "Slackware" package for NUT, install it and any dependencies, and then configure it for your specific UPS.
