September 24, 201213 yr Ok, im ready to copy all my media to the new unRAID system. I have 1 disk reserved for parity, same for cache, but haven't selected them (for both) yet. I read somewhere a while ago, that when copying/migrating data to new unRAID system, it's better to not assign a parity drive until the move is complete. so should i do that? or kindly advice thanks
September 24, 201213 yr There are adavantages and disadvantages. The advantage that comes to mind is that it is quicker to transfer data since parity doesn't have to be calculated when writing to the drive. The disadvantage is that you have no protection until you DO install a parity drive. So if you go this route I would suggest you keep the original disks until you have installed and built your parity drive. Once parity build is complete you can add your existing drives to your array or repurpose them elsewhere.
