[SOLVED] Upgrade from RC3 to RC8a - Can't connect via SMB. What changed?

Featured Replies

As the title says, I was running RC3 with no problems whatsoever. I decided to upgrade to RC8a, and now I can't access my shares via SMB.

Normally I just mount the SMB share in the connect to server prompt on OSX:

smb://tower

Then it just lets me choose which shares I want to mount, and I mount them. (I have this automate on startup so they just automount without me actually having to mount them unless I restart the server).

On RC8a, a dialog box pops up "there was a problem connecting to tower" when I try to use the same dialog: smb://tower

The webUI DOES work on RC8a. If I change the smb dialog to smb://10.0.1.2 and try to connect to the server, I am prompted for a user name and password. Regardless of what I enter, I get the same "there was a problem connecting to tower"

Reverting back to RC3 and everything works as advertised before and I can connect to my shares via smb://tower with no problems.

On a separate and somewhat unrelated note, I can't change anything on the users menu in unRAID either. When I try to add a user, nothing happens. When I try to change to root password, nothing happens (both on RC3 and RC8a).

So what's changed from RC3 to RC8a that's preventing me from accessing my shares? I'm assuming something in the way SMB is handled because the tower dialog no longer works in OSX for me on RC8a.

Are you connecting using a Mac?

Clearly something has changed between these versions that no longer lets me connect to the server using my Mac on OSX 10.8.2, so I assumed it was a SMB issue since that's how it's connecting.

I dont think I would have responded if I was not.  I'm running ML 10.8.1.  AFP and SMB work just fine.

May I ask how you're connecting to your shares?

I've never tried to set up AFP (been using SMB since I built this years ago before AFP was an option) but I guess I can give that a try tonight. Anything special about your SMB settings in unRAID? An example would be great.

Really puzzled now. After reverting to RC3 everything works A-OK, maybe there's a setting or something different that I need to do on my end.

You cant use root any more to connect to your drives only to the set up page..... So create a account and try again.

I haven't done anything special.

All of these work just fine.  I have a TimeMachine backup running right via (via AFP though).

I wrote that I also can't create new users. If I try, nothing shows up. I can't create any new users, change the root password or anything. I guess I'll try to troubleshoot starting from there.

users are lower case..... if you mix uper and lower it dose not work... My personal experance i am not sure this is your problem but if you give me the steps you are taking we can find out..

so, everything is not working A-OK as RC3 does not allow you to change any user settings.

Did you follow the install instructions for your version when you upgraded

Version 5.0-beta3, 5.0-beta4, 5.0-beta5, 5.0-beta5a, 5.0-beta5b

1. Prepare the flash: either shutdown your server and plug the flash into your PC or Stop the array and perform the following actions referencing the flash share on your network: Copy the files bzimage and bzroot from the zip file to the root of your flash device, overwriting the same-named files already there.

Delete the file config/super.dat. You will need to re-assign all your hard drives.

Did you backup your flash drive before the upgrade? have you been restoring from that or just replacing the bzimage and bzroot files when you were testing RC3?

It was a combination of issues.

First off, changing from RC3 to RC8a, you can no longer connect to your server via SMB without having a user defined other than root. In RC3, even though the changelog in the 5.0beta builds says this would change it didn't so since I never had any problems I assumed it didn't affect me.

Secondly, the creation of users, as already pointed out, must be entirely in lowercase. Probably some limitation to the networking protocols, but every single time I tried to create a user, I was just using my first name, Aaron. It failed every single time because of the stupid capital A. Using 'aaron' I now have another user, and am able to connect via SMB. Without another defined user other than root, this kept failing. After the addition of my user 'aaron' I could get the user dialog through smb://tower, and after entering my info and password it loaded my shares just fine.

Thanks everyone for the help. Would have been somewhat easier to solve the problem but since there isn't really one place with documentation on the 5.0 series, the entire user level security was unfamiliar to me, and reading the changelog didn't help me put together the users/SMB issue as related.
