September 30, 201213 yr Hey Guys, One of my drives died on friday so I went out got a drive plugged it in, and off it went with rebuild, it crashed for whatever reason last night, so i restarted and this is what it's doing: Disk 17 is the one getting the rebuild, as you can see disk 4 appears unformatted, if I look at the physical drives, there is no activity on disk 4, all the others are scrubbing away wtf? To add to the confusion look at the bottom status screen. Any Ideas? what is this scrub going to contain after it's done?
September 30, 201213 yr Do NOT select Format. After the rebuild, save the syslog and restart the system.
September 30, 201213 yr It uses the raw data from each partition to rebuild a drive. So, formatted or not doesn't matter. It appears from your screen capture that it is reading disk4 about the same as every other disk. I would suspect that disk4 didn't mount for some reason. Wait until the rebuild is complete and see where you stand.
October 1, 201213 yr Author Thank you for the inputs, I waited for the rebuilt to complete and did reboot, however the disk 4 seems to have issues and physically the indicator lights showed it as no activity, the rebuild turned up garbage, I did make a backup of disk 17 prior to me replacing it, so I have that data. Since I opened up the server I've made a few discoveries, one is I need to physically rellocate it, one of my Supermicro cages the backplane has corroded, it's functional however I fear it will fail eventually. This is due to my other hobby, Salt water aquariums, a couple feet away I mix salt for water changes, my guess is small particulates slowly get sucked up through the fans and deposit, with humidity this causes a perfect corrosive environment, I also think that PCB board had some residue that allowed partuculate to stick as it almost appeared as wet like. As for the Array I decided to reshuffle/rebuild it, I will go to Unraid 5 latest RC and build and expand couple disks at a time, I will recover current drives and save data to the array as I go along, and expand it slowly. Perhaps something that's been long overdue as it grew over time and some drives didn't go through advanced format. I believe some of the current drives are flaky and perhaps it's time for them to go, will be doing full preclear on each and also looking at unmenu for realocated sectors I have a sneaky feeling there's some bad apples in the bunch.
