September 30, 201213 yr Hi, I'm trying to find a way to either make my server do a clean power down or sleep (preferably a clean shutdown) after about 30 minutes or an hour of inactivity. I've been searching around and have seen some information that the powerdown script can be used to this. Now, I'm not very familiar with Linux so could someone help me out or point me in the right direction to get this set up? Thank you very much!
October 2, 201213 yr Is there a particular reason you want the entire machine to shut down opposed to just letting your drives sleep? Its much easier to let your system idle in a low power state with the drives spun down.
October 2, 201213 yr Part of the SimpleFeatures plugin is a sleep function. You have the possibility to put the system to sleep immediately by pressing a button in the GUI or run a script in the background which puts the system to sleep on the conditions you specify yourself.
October 2, 201213 yr Author Right now I typically don't use the server every day and when I do it's only for a couple hours at night so I just completely shutdown the server when I'm done with it. I also moved into a new apartment and right now the best location for it is inside of a closet where it starts to get a little warmer if I leave it turned on for long periods on times. Being able to have it shutdown automatically would make it very convenient for me.
October 2, 201213 yr I just installed simplefeatures. I highly recommend the S3 sleep if you mobo has the WOL cabability. S3 sleep will shut down all fans and drives. I keep my box in a confined space and the box only draws about ~1watt when in S3 sleep as opposed to 60watts when running, and 150 when everything is at full tilt. Hope that helps!
October 3, 201213 yr Author Thanks! I will give simple features a try and see how that works out. If someone has a way to do a shutdown please let me know.
