October 5, 201213 yr Hi all, Right now I have a 13 drive (including cache and parity) unraid rig. It consists of a Gigabyte 780G base motherboard with a Phenom X2 7750 processor (AM2+). I've found out that the motherboard is the culprit in my crashing problem, and it needs to be replaced. I'm thinking of just upgrading the CPU/mobo/memory instead. CPU wise, the only intensive application I use is Airvideo real-time conversion. And the Phenom X2 7750 I have could handle most of the video I tried through it just fine. I already have the following components I'll use: 4GB Crucial DDR3 (1 stick, uses standard DDR3 voltage) 2x Monoprice SIL3132 (2xSATA2, PCIe 1x) Rosewill Marvell based card (4xSATA2, PCIe 4x) Intel Gigabit NIC (PCIe 1x) Promise 4-port SATA card (PCI)... only use it for preclearing Lian-Li A71F case, with iStar 4-bay 3.5" rack and a single 5.25" to 3.5" rack (space for 16x 3.5" drives if I add one more 5.25" adapter) XFX Core Edition 850w power supply I'm thinking of these combos (both brand new): Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 (Z68 chipset, 2xSATA3, 4xSATA2, 2xPCIe 8x, 1xPCIe 4x and 1xPCIe 1x) Intel G850 Processor (2x2.9GHz) Total Cost: $150+tax Comments: After adding in all my cards (including NIC), I'll have a free PCIe 8x slot. It will provide 14x SATA ports (12xSATA2, 2xSATA3). OR ASUS F2A85-M Pro (A85x chipset, 7xSATA3, 2xPCIe 8x, 2xPCIe 1x) AMD A4-5300 Processor (2x3.4GHz) Total Cost: $175+tax Comments: It will provide 15x SATA ports (7xSATA3 & 8xSATA2), but leave no PCIe slots free (unless I stop using the Intel NIC). I'm leaning towards the Intel rig, but any comments/suggestions?
