July 21, 200817 yr Ok, I have been using unRaid for quiet some time now and am quit pleased. It works flawlessly with my windows OS computers and my XBMC's. The problem is when I try to connect using any linux distro (ubuntu, opensuse, pclinuxos, etc.). I currently use ubuntu and I can see the tower but that it. If I try to do anything else it hangs or times out. I can access the files on my windows PC's with no prob, its just unraid. I read somewhere that it may the DFS that was added in the later releases of unraid. I never had this problem until I upgraded to 4.2 and now 4.3. Is the DFS the problem and if so can I turn it off (easily) and not have it effect the windows PC's or XBMC's? I am not real versed with Linux, so please bear with my ignorance.
July 21, 200817 yr I believe all of the discussion about this is in this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1975.0.
July 21, 200817 yr Author Yeah, I saw that prior to posting, but he said it was the "hard way" of doing it. I am a little scared to mess with the files, but if its the only way, then so be it. I just found it interesting that it is not more of a problem with the linux users.
July 21, 200817 yr I posted the simpler solution in that other thread... to add two lines to the end of your "go" script. sed -i -e "s/host msdfs = Yes/host msdfs = No/" -e "s/msdfs root = Yes/msdfs root = No/" /etc/samba/smb.conf smbcontrol smbd reload-config Joe L.
July 21, 200817 yr It is more of a problem. I hope this is mine to. I have been trying to run Linuxmce which is built on Gutsy 7.10 Kubuntu. I have been pulling my hair out for two weeks trying to fix this, as you can see from my other posts. I basically rebuilt the server and replaced every piece of network gear I own. WOW what a waste of $$$. My situation is this, a clean install of LMCE then I plug the server into the switch at 1gb. LMCE finds the server no problem sets it up including all the shares. Then it just hangs for hours. nothing is frozen and I can watch movies from the server on the xbox es as well from Unraid, but as soon as I try to access the data directory in LMCE it basically just hunts and hunts and hunts looking for the shares even though is does find all of them at initial setup. I also upgraded to 4.3.3 from 4.2b6 in the midst of all this as well. Does this sound like the same problem you guys are having. Joe any idea what that new local master yes or no switch does in the settings window. I remember reading on another board that it deals with resolving something.domain.local on a network. Is this the same and should we leave it off or does it need to be on for linux sharing as well. This problem also must affect XBMC for Linux as BLKMGK and I have been having a terrible time trying to get our shares to play video_ts stuff from XBMC in either 7.10 or 8.04. TIME for 4.3.4 Tom. regards, Dave
July 21, 200817 yr One of the machines on your subnet must be set to be the master browser. See this link for some details: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188001 If it is currently disabled, and if you have no other windows machines on your LAN, it probably needs to be enabled. Joe L.
July 21, 200817 yr So it is for windows shares and not for shares to linux. IE I have two XP Sp2 workstations as well as my LinuxMCE server/core and Media Director and then one xbox. rgds, Dave
July 22, 200817 yr Author Ok, this works great for my XBMCs. They used to take a couple of seconds to load a movie, etc. But now they are instant! Thanks. But, my linux boxes still cannot connect. I enabled the Master Browser, but still nothing. The Tower shows up under the workgroup, but not nothing past that. No shares (folders / files). It did eliminate Ubuntu hanging. Any suggestions?
July 22, 200817 yr While Joe helps with the more technical stuff, I'll just mention a couple of really basic items, knowing you probably have checked these, but always helps to make sure all bases are covered... Are ALL machines configured with a consistent workgroup name? Have you checked nameserver entries, see this: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Improving_unRAID_Performance#Update_nameserver_.26_hosts_file

Any suggestions? which version of Ubuntu are you running. IN Gutsy you can still add your domain/workgroup name from one of the network mmc in the advanced section in 8.04 you have to edit the smb.conf if you google you will find lots of issues with this. I never had a problem seeing my folders or shares from 7.10 or 8.04 if I went to places I could see my windows workgroups fine. It was only when I tried to add a share to a mounted drive in xbmc on gutsy or hardy it would hang forever trying to open the file or folder but eventually would. rgds, Dave
July 22, 200817 yr Author @ crankbearing - I am using 8.04. Never tried to access my XBMC other than using FTP @ robj - yep I can see the tower in the workgroup, just not the contents (dsk/ folders/ files), Its on the tower only. I have no problem with accessing my windows stuff.
July 22, 200817 yr I've been fighting with a somewhat related problem over the last day. I recently build an Ubuntu 8.04 machine to to the linux version of XBMC. I can see my unraid box and browse the shares rather quickly when adding a source under Videos, Music, etc. However, XBMC crashes immediately when I try to access that share. I have tried adding the two lines to my GO script and continue to have this issue. I realize this may be more specific to XBMC, but I have no problems accessing shares on a Windows box, through the same XBMC interface. Anyone else experimenting with these new linux XBMC builds? Thanks
July 22, 200817 yr Author What am I doing wrong. Using a fresh install of 8.04 and not changing anything should it connect to unraid and show the shares under the windows network?
July 22, 200817 yr Hey Guys, You need to look in the xbmc forums for Linux and check out the video_ts folders. Do you have USER shares turned on. I do not and have no problems accessing the files and folders below the share WHEN all the drives are mounted in UBUNTU first, but as I stated from the iniital install I could go to networks under places and see all of my windows computers and fully browse any shares that were there. What is your workgroup in unraid say? Dave
July 22, 200817 yr Author User shares are enabled Unraid - WORKGOUP same as my windows machines and ubuntu I can see the Tower under network but not any of the files or folders or shares. I finally got it to mount, but still does not show in my network. Good enough for now though. Thanks.
July 22, 200817 yr Unraid - WORKGOUP If you're spelling is consistently incorrect, that may be your problem!
July 22, 200817 yr ALSO remember case sensitivity issues. I know I had linuxmce in my setup as workgroup and it was no go I had to change it to LinuxMCE. rgds, Dave
July 22, 200817 yr Author Thanks Jim for pointing out my spelling expertise! j/k It is WORKGROUP, I just misspelled in this post. Maybe I will change it to something else to help avoid any confusion. That way it is different than the defaults for all the machines requiring me to double check everything. I guess I am still a little confused why Tower would show up under the windows network and workgroup, but not its contents.
July 23, 200817 yr Permissions is what I would check next. As I said my system with gutsy or hardy shares fine with no use shares turned on. Dave.
July 23, 200817 yr Author I have user shares on. No worries as I finally was able to mount the shares.
