October 10, 201213 yr Hi, I've been using Playstation Media Server for a while now on 4.7. It seems there is a breakaway group that has built upon the Playstation Media Server (PMS), and created Universal Media Server (UMS), which was started with the belief that more can be achieved with a fresh start with new people and new ideas. Anyway, I just thought I would post it up. You can download the linux version here http://www.universalmediaserver.com/ Installation should work in exactly the same fashion as PMS. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3072.msg159830#msg159830
October 10, 201213 yr Author I've had it running and intend to swap over. I just have a few issues with pms that i want to sort put before copying across configs. I think ums might have more momentum and there has been talk of a webui too which would make config much easier. At the moment it's pretty much pms but that will change over time.
October 11, 201213 yr I've been using the new Universal Media Server. I find it much more reliable...no issues at all.
October 11, 201213 yr I've been using the new Universal Media Server. I find it much more reliable...no issues at all. Just a clarification, I have UMS installed on my Windows 7 PC. I just use my unraid box as a media library.
October 12, 201213 yr Author How difficult is the install for UMS? If you know how to telnet into your server, put files on your flash key it's not that hard. You need to follow the guide I linked to for Playstation Media Server, but just replace all references to PMS with UMS. Universal Media Server is an offshoot of PMS so all the install stuff should work ok. I am working on a guide just for UMS, but I also intend on updating it and making sure it's easier to install.
October 12, 201213 yr Couldn't find the answer on a search. If I install UMS, can I still access the files directly? I use XBMC in the den which plays anything, so I don't need it for that. Was going to try UMS with a Panasonic BD player in the bedroom so I wouldn't need to make another HTPC.
October 12, 201213 yr Author UMS is a DLNA player so it streams your files on your network. I've had mine streaming to 3 devices at once before. If your BR player has that ability it should work. You might have to tweak one of the specific renderer files a though.
October 13, 201213 yr Author I've got this running side by side with PS3MS. It's running using the same mencoder, java and mplayer packages that I linked to for the PS3MS. The packages only need to be installed once, and then just run both media servers, PMS.sh and UMS.sh. I'll let you know how I go with UMS. My test rig wasn't much use because it ran out of RAM, but my live system seems to be coping well now that they are both running. I did have to manually start UMS though, and used the nohup ./UMS.sh & start up from telnet. For some reason it wouldn't run from the go script. FYI if you are going to run both like I am for testing, you will need to change the port of UMS which is the same as PS3MS (Port 5001). I made UMS 5002.
October 25, 201213 yr Are you guys using LAT with UMS? It is one of the big "deals" with UMS - problem is, you can't implement it on anything but a Windoze box. If you are, is the performance noticeably better?

Was going to try UMS with a Panasonic BD player in the bedroom so I wouldn't need to make another HTPC. All you need to do is buy a cheap media player and hook it up. Why everyone is so hooked on setting up whole computer with a video card and all that baffles me. And a media player would most likely support all the major protocols. SMB, NFS, FTP, etc....
October 28, 201213 yr The thing is what files the media streamer is compatible with. I have a mix of .iso, .vob, and mkv. Some steamers have an issue with .vob and .iso. Also certain audio codecs are not supported. I plan to re-rip my .vob to either .iso or .mkv. Have to anyway. When my WHS v1 crashed, a lot of my .vob structures became corrupt and/or lost. IMO, XBMC with a nettop is the best solution but not necessarily the cheapest.

IMO, XBMC with a nettop is the best solution but not necessarily the cheapest. I'm use to my Dune and Popcorn players. I've played VOBs, MKVs, AVIs, MP4s, WMVs, ISOs (BR/DVD), and many other videos I've used. I haven't found a codec I can't play yet and Dune is still updating their firmware. Just updated last week with a new one. When I rip a DVD, I don't keep the DVD structure. I use either MakeMKV or DVDFab to throw it into a file. Making an ISO will protect the structure also.
November 5, 201213 yr I do like the PCH but I was having problems with forced subtitles (MI:III, Avatar, others). Had a good setup with the add-on but I was just looking for a one stop shop as far as media player. Just sold a PCH A200 w/80GB HDD on e-bay. The guy got a great deal. So far, for me, the best solution was XBMC for my media and a ATV3 for netflix and what not. ATV3 has the best Netflix app, my receiver (Marantz 6006) for Pandora, other components(Panasonic BDT220 (why I was looking as UMS to begin with), and DTV), w/an iTach, Roomie Remote app, and an iPad was the best solution for whole home automation. Plenty of stuff to fall back on as far as Airplay is concerned. Still working on a security system and a Nest thermostat. I'm still building though. By the time I'm done, should be perfect for me. I'm just as guilty as the next noob, but I'm just tired of keeping up with the latest trends and gadgets and apps and streamlining gear... Time to back off and do what works best with my set up and what I'm looking for with what I have. Back on topic, Great job on UMS! I will play around with it on my Sony TV. May save me from building another box!
November 5, 201213 yr Look at the Pivos with an XBMC flash. Cheap and runs great IME for a little settop box. XBMC is also doing DLNA I think and does UPNP too.
February 1, 201313 yr Author I had this running on 4.7 without an issue. I upgraded to 5rc10 so that I could run plex (requires 5) because of my new LG tv. I started getting a crond error in RC10, so nothing would run that required crond (like email status reports) which was a pain. I narrowed it down to UMS, but I don't think it's UMS.sh itself, but one of the 53 packages that install to get it running. They probably need updating but that's not easy for me (linux noob). Plex comes with a DLNA player, and I haven't found fault with it yet, so I just stopped using UMS, and have it installed on my win pc as a backup. For some reason I could never get UMS to start on boot anyway, so it was a blessing in disguise really. I think UMS is really making it's mark though, and eclipsing PS3MS for development and features. It's replaced PS3MS on my Win7 pc as a backup solution.
March 17, 201412 yr I see UMS was voted as Project of the Month on SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/blog/march-2014-potm/ Anyone running UMS on a current version of UnRAID?
March 18, 201412 yr Author I have it running on my windows pc as a backup for Plex on my server. It's moving at a greater pace than PMS (Playstation Media Server) that is forked from with more frequent updates and new features. As for running on unraid, it is possible, but I found that there was too many dependencies and in the end I got frustrated and gave up. I'm new to linux and fumbled my way around but couldn't get it running on v5beta a while ago with throwing up errors. Plugins have made me even lazier because now with a smooth running unraid system I've forgotten how to do most of the install. lol.

If your referring to the Linux XBMC build, they killed that for Gotham. Now you have to run it as an app in Android. If that's a positive or a negative I don't know cause I haven't tried it but I don't like the idea as much as a Linux/XBMC only box. Sent from my SM-N900W8 using Tapatalk
