How do hidden shares work exactly?

Featured Replies

I'm exporting my user shares read-only and my disk shares read/write-hidden.  I was expecting to access the hidden disk shares from my 2003 and XP machines by simply choosing the "Show Hidden Files/Folders" option under Explorer.  However, they still don't show.  Even choosing "Show Hidden System Files" doesn't make the show.  It's not really a problem, because I can access them by adding the disk# part to the path.  Is that just how unRaid's hidden shares work.

Actually, I might even like it this way because most of my computers already have Show Hidden File/Folders enabled.  It makes it much more obvious when you're somewhere where you might do some damage.

Hidden shares work similarly to hidden files/folders, but are not implemented the same.  A hidden share is marked "non-browsable", that is, it won't show up in any browse list, thus will not show up in My Network Places.  But if you know the name of the share you can connect to it.

A hidden file/directory is  one that has it's "hidden" attribute set.  The file/folder thus will not show up in a directory listing.

Unfortunately, the "Show Hidden Files/Folders" applies only to files/folders, not shares.  (The genius of M$.)

I think they have it correct (not that I want them to hear me ;) ) - what's the point of having hidden things if Explorer can show them anyway? ;)  I like shares especially, because by their nature, they are on the network, to be properly hidden, so that there is no chance of some user on the network stumbling across them!

You can't try and find a way to access something you don't know about :)

Matt :)
