October 13, 201213 yr I am looking to add more drives to my array, and am looking at 4 tb models, I am looking at this model, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145560 any recommendations on a good 7200 rpm 4tb drive.
October 14, 201213 yr I have four of those drives, three of which are in my unRAID. They are pretty fast and I haven't experienced any issues so far.
October 14, 201213 yr I'm using 7 of these Hitach 4TB disks (HDS724040ALE640). No problems, but they can get a bit warmer then other drives. They will run at 40+ Celsius in notime. So pay some attention to cooling if you think that is a problem.
October 14, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the info guys, one other question, how long did it take to do a preclear on this drive?
October 15, 201213 yr Actually, looks like 39 hours. ========================================================================1.13 == invoked as: ./preclear_disk.sh -A -m /dev/sda == Hitachi HDS724040ALE640 PK2301P == Disk /dev/sda has been successfully precleared == with a starting sector of 1 == Ran 1 cycle == == Using :Read block size = 8225280 Bytes == Last Cycle's Pre Read Time : 9:46:06 (113 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Zeroing time : 10:19:09 (107 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Post Read Time : 18:50:08 (59 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Total Time : 38:56:32 == == Total Elapsed Time 38:56:32 == == Disk Start Temperature: 36C == == Current Disk Temperature: 39C, == ============================================================================ ** Changed attributes in files: /tmp/smart_start_sda /tmp/smart_finish_sda ATTRIBUTE NEW_VAL OLD_VAL FAILURE_THRESHOLD STATUS RAW_VALUE Temperature_Celsius = 153 166 0 ok 39 No SMART attributes are FAILING_NOW 0 sectors were pending re-allocation before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after pre-read in cycle 1 of 1. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 1. 0 sectors are pending re-allocation at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors pending re-allocation did not change. 0 sectors had been re-allocated before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors are re-allocated at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors re-allocated did not change. ============================================================================ ============================================================================ == == S.M.A.R.T Initial Report for /dev/sda == Disk: /dev/sda smartctl 5.40 2010-10-16 r3189 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: Hitachi HDS724040ALE640 Serial Number: PK2301P Firmware Version: MJAOA3B0 User Capacity: 4,000,787,030,016 bytes Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: ATA-8-ACS revision 4 Local Time is: Wed Sep 12 20:25:26 2012 Local time zone must be set--see zic m SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. October 15, 201213 yr +1 for this drive. I have a similar Hitachi 4tb drive (model 0S03363) as parity, and no problems. That price isn't the greatest however. I'm not sure why we're seeing a downwards price trend on sub-4TB drives, but these guys are not budging (or going up!). When they first came out, I saw them a few times for $199 and $220, and now they never seem to drop below $250-$300
October 15, 201213 yr That's good to hear! Perhaps a sign of the times.... Every time I've searched online in the last month, I have not seen anything under $250...
October 15, 201213 yr Author Amazon has this drive for $270.00, I might wait a little longer an see if prices get any lower.
October 16, 201213 yr Amen! I'm barely getting into 3TB drives, the price per gig for the 4TB drives is too high right now...
