Swapping sata ports

Featured Replies

I'm currently running unraid 5rc8 and in the process of migrating my drives from the onboard sata ports to a m1015.

I am currently using 13 disks spread across three controllers:

1) Motherboard's sata controller (on a Supermicro X8SIL-F ) / 6 of 6 ports used all in the array

2) AOC-SASLP-MV8  / 6 of 8 ports used all in the array

3) SATA2 Serial ATA II PCI-Express RAID Controller Card (Silicon Image SIL3132) / 1 of the two ports used as a disk outside the array

I'd like to move disks on 1), 3) to a m1015 controller. So, in order to not mess up the array I will do the following.

-1) Disable all plugins (by renaming /boot/extra & /boot/config/plugins)

-2) Ensure that "Enable auto start" is set to "No"

-3) Take a snapshot of the disk order with serial numbers

-4) Shutdown array

-5) Rearrange disks on sata controllers

-6) Boot

-7) Unraid should detect something is off

-8) Reassign disks in the correct order from snapshot

-9) Start array

-10) profit

Does this make sense?

It makes sense, but, the task might be simpler than you think as unRAID 5.0rc8 uses the disk model/serial number to affiliate disks with logical "slots" in the array.

Therefore, after you reposition the disks, as long as the BIOS recognizes them, they will already (still) be in their respective logical assignments.  (assuming all wiring is secure, and disk controller settings set to present them as a bunch of disks)

In other words, odds are you will not need to do any re-assignment at all.  You'll just need to start the array.

On early 5.0beta release and prior, you would have to re-assign the disks as you described.

The one thing you can do to help yourself is after stopping the array, prior to repositioning the disks, is to make a copy of the "config" directory on your flash drive.  It would let you quickly get back to your starting point if something unexpected were to happen.
